Who´s Gonna Be Brave Enough To Develop A Decentralized Video Hosting Service For Steemit?
'All big things in this world are done by people who are naive and have an idea that is obviously impossible.' - Charles Hamilton
It might be naive planning to excel YouTube with a decentralized video hosting platform within short time. However, if there was one feature able to kill it on steemit, it would be definitely a solution for video content.
Those who say it can´t be done are usually interrupted by others doing it.
SteemVideo - Why not?
Uncountable people have been writing about the idea of a decentralized video service for steemit during the past months.
Even two projects in practice were presented on steemit - what happened to them?
@furion with SteemQ and @steemrollin with SteemTube.
Lately there haven´t been any news on video applications to be build on the steem blockchain. Or did I just miss them?
Chances:
- TIMING: Perfect moment since the market leader YouTube is losing credibility.
- DEMAND: An invulnerable solution without censorship is highly demanded (s. point 1).
- MARKET: Low barriers to entry and strongly growing sector.
- POTENTIAL: Strongly growing community with high rate of early adoption.
Risk:
- INVEST: Capital needed to build required infrastructure (especially band width).
- KNOW-HOW: High level of development skills needed (blockchain technology)
- COMPETITION: There are already some players entering the market.
Who is already working on it?
Talking about competition... These are three of the decentralized video projects that have been already announced during the past weeks:
Livepeer - A Decentralized Live Video Broadcast Platform and Crypto Token Protocol
LBRY - A Decentralized Digital Library And Open Source Alternative To YouTube
Streamium - Decentralized video streaming using bitcoin payment channels
Please feel free to add others that I might have missed!
If somebody brought the money, I´d bring the rest! :D
Talking seriously... What do you think?
Would an easy access for video content creators bring steemit to the next level?
Would disappointed YouTubers and their powerful groups of followers revolutionize the platform and even the whole concept of decentralized social media? Could SteemVideo be the ultimate solution to their monetization and censorship problems? How do you evaluate the chances and risks of such an idea?
Looking forward to reading your thoughts :)

It's possible... one word: FABRIC 😉
Thanks for the adding, @lovejoy!
Seems that you have a flagging shadow.
It would seem that way yes, a new adoring fan in @berniesanders xoxo
Is this a Bernie bot? Anyways, I´ve mentioned it in the abuse channel.
Yeah, apparently:

Ufff.....
Good morning marly! all's well. 🌴🌺
Good morning ☀️🙃
We shall overcome... some ... day. How about right now? :)
Love your positivity 😉👍
Marly! Just today I saw this apartment window lettering, set against the sky... and I thought of you. :)
Would you honor us with a visit to this emerging grassroots endeavor? :) community map / directory ...and help us spread the word? bless, b
That´s cute :)
Congratulations to your initiative. That looks really amazing.
However, I will take a steemit break so can´t be of great help. My today´s post was supposed to be my last one for a while (for the exact reasons explained in the post)...
Best of luck to you and your project! You are a great one, and the community will appreciate that.
Marly
Bandwidth charges on serving videos is horrendous.
I have known many a person who quite YouTube only to return because they couldn't afford the bandwidth.
The decentralized Torrent like video streaming may work.
Else, we need a much better internet.
I do not feel YouTube is being honest with its funding. I believe they are losing a LOT of money just so they can maintain an iron grip on video services. So that they can control the narrative. After all, they were formed by the same group that brought you Project Mockingbird.
I can only imagine how expensive it must be to run systems like these. That´s why it was my no. 1 risk on the above mentioned list :)
However, if we find people who invest in steem we may find some that are willing to invest in further projects built on steem. I think the potential is tremendously high. Only imagine that the service wouldn´t be completely free and that bloggers on steemit (and other applications that might follow) would pay a light fee according to the rewards they receive for their vlogs. That could generate a really nice ROI for the stakeholders.
Our community needs a video platform so badly! I envision it beginning like YouTube . I also envision a Netflix subscription-based clone (SteemFlix?) that accepts Steem as payment and even develops its own original programming. If we, as a community can dream it, we can make it so. Resteemed!
these are great ideas @ericvancewalton!!
Thanks! I would love to have SteemFlix produce my Alarm Clock Dawn trilogy. : )
Yes, and the more I've thought about this Steemflix idea of yours, the more excited I get, it's brilliant.
Thanks, Ruth! Not only would it get Steem circulating, we could also develop some of the amazing content here into original shows and/or films. I've even been looking to develop Alarm Clock Dawn into a series. I was going to pitch to NetFlix but if something like this SteemFlix idea blooms here I can wait.
who would be the person to work on this? have you approached anyone? certainly @andrarchy but also maybe someone who can do the coding and technical aspects of getting it in motion.
I've reached out to a few already. We're talking about enlisting devs and investors. 😊
excellent news
Oh, I like your visions! :) The very best thing about all these ideas is that their implementation is possible. It only needs to be done. Have you read this article Adil @the-alien wrote a couple of weeks ago? https://cryptoinsider.com/decentralization-movie-industries/ Very interesting in that context!
Thanks for the reblog, it´s much appreciated ;)
You're welcome @surfermarly! Thanks for sharing Adil's article as well, it's extremely well written!
I'd love to see some co-operation with Steemit and projects like StorjX.
https://storj.io/
Last I heard about it their prices for storage were a meager 10% of competitors like Amazon. (Don't quote me on that tho as I am not 100% sure and its probably volatile)
Interesting! Thanks for adding that one, I haven´t heard about it so far and will definitely have a look at it. Cool! :)
Some more info here: https://storj.io/pricing.html
This will be a revolution, its an incredible idea with lots of potential.
Steemit developers should definetly take this opportunity before its too late.
Great post am a crypto trader and now i have my eyes on lbc.
Thanks for your nice comment @brianadams and best of luck for your trading activities :)
Thank you so Much. @surfermarly
LBRY feels like the solution. They're about to enter open beta, and they solve the issue of hosting. Otherwise - how do you freely host huge amounts of video data for steemit in a scalable manner?
If we can post free LBRY videos here, that would be sick. I have no idea if such an integration will be possible - way way beyond my skill set to think about that
It's possible the 'fabric' architecture could allow us to handle video on a single use case chain, or in multiples.
You mean this fabric? https://get.fabric.io
Is it decentralized? "We’re excited to announce we’ve signed an agreement for Google to acquire Fabric. We expect to continue to operate Fabric without any interruptions at this time; however, terms of use will change in connection with the transaction. "
Fabric: Parallel Blockchain
By the end of this year, Steemit also intends to roll out what it describing as a “cutting-edge parallel blockchain” architecture system called Fabric, which stands for Fully Asynchronous Blockchain Rendering with Independent Conformity.
This sets the groundwork for the company's long-term growth while dramatically enhancing scalability, performance, fault isolation and modularity.
By utlizing Fabric, multiple and inter-connected blockchains can be created, each handling separate features within the Steemit platform. This nullifies any risk of a blockchain bottleneck due to single core processing demands.
I don´t understand half of what you are saying but it sounds tremendously good! Haha
LOL - I agree :D
LOL.. :) yes, and... what is fabric?
LBRY looks good. Even the evergreen Kim Dotcom this summer will launch a similar service called 'Bitcache'. Anyway the both projects just have a little bad detail; they aren't based on steems and they will not partecipate to build the Steem ecosystem.
But even projects that weren´t build on the same chain might be interesting for cooperations, right?
That's true. On the plus side, utilizing a second cryptocurrency increases decentralization and reduces risk of total system failure :-D

Disclaimer: I am just a bot trying to be helpful.
You are right, LBRY definitely feels good. I´ve just signed up to their service and am super excited to know more about it. It seems that they are going to "open doors" within the months of April. Let´s stay tuned :)
Marly becoming a crypto nerd! Yayayaya
LOL - That's your fault baby and you know it 😄😚
LBRY?
Yep. Just in case you consider to join their platform, please use this URL:
https://lbry.io/get?r=ht21j
Then I will get a nice credit for bringing you as a friend :)
If my understanding is correct from what I have read and heard (they didn't publish a whitepaper), what LBRY is doing if pretty simple, they are just using a blockchain in lieu and place of the traditional tracker host used by Bittorrent, and adding on top a service layer that manages micropayments and name registry with collateral auction. We already have all the required components in Steem, they just need to be combined in the right configuration, and slapped up on a sidechain to avoid polluting the main Steem chain. We even have all the additional machinery that allows people to up/down vote content in Youtube, comment, create or subscribe to channels etc. The only issue is that sidechains is a feature that Dan was planning to introduce soon in Graphene, and now that he is gone, I doubt that the rest of the development team will dare to jump into such a technically involved undertaking at a time where they are still struggling to mitigate the damage Dan's departure did to the execution capacity and technical level of the team.
Steemit is in a perfect position for live stream. Content producers could allow free previews on Steemit and allow upvoting. Then after a certain period Steem users would need to pay in steem dollars for premium services. Steem could take a small transaction fee for the service.
Exactly! That´s another big advantage of the rewards system. Fees dont hurt too much since you can re-invest the money you earn by blogging.
That´s how a self-breading / self-supporting eco-system works.
Great adding, thank you @hedge-x. Following you now :)
Take a look at the following...
I think it will answer some of your questions.
Ok I will. Thanks 😉👍
Super post @surfermarly. A decentralized video platform, I bow to you for planting the seed and initiating the fleshing out of this most needed idea.
I see lots of positive comments already. resteemed.
Thank you very much @bilbop! I somehow knew that you might like this one :)
And yes, the reactions are proving the need.
You are most welcome @surfermarly.
The need, indeed, just add speed ; )
Thanks my friend.
You are welcome! All eyes on LBRY 😉👍
