Church of Hallgrímur (Hallgrímskirkja) - Reykjavik, Iceland

in #architecturalphotography7 years ago (edited)

Once upon a time, in Reykjavik...

The Church of Hallgrímur is the largest church in Iceland.
As the architecture of Iceland is mostly low-rise, this is also one of the tallest structures in the country.
The church is about 75 m high, and it is the most important landmark in Reykjavik. The idea of this structure was to obtain landscape formations characteristic in Iceland (volcanic rocks, mountains, and glaciers).

The top of the tower serves as an observatory, and it is available for tourists (for a reasonable price).
The best view to catch! 07092211.JPG
The adventure was to be trapt in a small elevator with many tourists who didn't take shower for few days, but I've survived, somehow. 😖

The statue in front of the Church is dedicated to the Leifur Eiríksson (c. 970 – c. 1020) who is considered to be the first European to discover America, long time before Christopher Columbus.

One of the most valuable parts of the Hallgrímskirkja is a huge pipe organ built by German Johannes Klais. It is 5m tall, and it weighs 25 tons.
There are 5275 pipes!
