Dissected Fish (# Sciencepic, Graphic Images)

Have you ever gutted a fish? Yes? No? How about dissecting one?
For educational purposes, every first-semester student at my University needs to dissect certain animals. One of those animals is Oncorhynchus mykiss, the Rainbow trout.

In this picture, you can see the air bladder (slightly see-through tube) and directly below, the pink mass is a testicle. The slightly darker pink thing is the caecum.

If you open up the fish a little bit more towards the gills, you can see this (different fish, obviously):

The light pink-red triangle is the heart, next to it you can see the liver.

What can't be seen in these pictures is that both of the fish photographed had testicles and ovaries. No, Rainbow trouts are usually not hermaphrodites. Yes, every single fish we dissected (roughly 30) had this anomaly. The current theory is that it's caused by estrogen-like chemicals in our water, which disturbs the fish's hormone balance.

Why are those chemicals in our water? Several reasons. One would be softeners used in plastic, which lands in the rivers. But hormonal birth control can also contribute to this kind of pollution.

Yes very interesting @suesa
I daily split the fish, but who did not notice about that you mentioned
I am a cook, of course I daily split the fish.
I just know and see parts of fish heart, liver and eggs special adult female fish.
When I read your post, I just understand what we should play on the fish, because everyone takes advantage of fish and even eat fish. I think this is a very good science for us to apply in front of children who are still at the desk study.
Good science and interesting post. thank you

Some years ago I was fishing quite regularly, so gutting a fish isn´t new to me. Actually, to dissect one never came to my mind but it´s definitely interesting.

Regarding the chemicals I´d more tend to say it´s the hormonal birth control. Millions of woman are using it these days, which means the chemicals are basically constantly flowing into the water out there...

I have never dissected whole animal before, only pig's heart, and ox eyes in secondary school time. They were so smelly.

Always love the name of the species name of Rainbow trout!!

O. my-kiss

The pollution problem and hormones use for fish agriculture are definitely something we should worry about, it would be too late if we are seeing humans with such display of two sexual organs!!

@suesa Little I add from the results of your post
You mention the color differences contained in the inner fish such as the color of the heart and color heart.
But did not mention the differences in fish. (pisces)
According to my knowledge, pisces there are 2 (two)
First: Chondrichthyes
Second: Osteichthyes
Chondrichthyes is a skeleton fish in the form of cartilage without hard bones
While Osteichthyes is a fish consisting mostly of hard bones, only in some parts of the body there is cartilage.
I think you should explain it that way, because you are a teacher who will provide material for them.
Thank you for sharing, interesting post

The only fish i gut/cut are those that are meant for my stomach. Nice post. Resteemed

Our professor actually collected the leftover fish to make soup for herself. Nothing has to go to waste! :P

I have heard similar things, but its the university canteen will serve fish dishes after dissection class XD
(It was some University in China)

That's enough to put anybody off catching their own fish for life and the next life haha.
I remember catching a rainbow trout in the local stream when I was young, couldn't have been much over 12 year old. The slippery thing was damn near impossible to kill, after about an hour of learning the hard way, I took 2 scabby looking fillets into my mum to cook for me. Delicious would have been an understatement, 10 times nicer than anything you can buy today from a shop.
I've said it before and no doubt will say it again, those who think some things improve with age, need to learn that it has nothing to do with age, rather the level of pollution the thing was produced under. ;)

Wow, that's terrifying. I knew about the hormonal birth control being a contributing factor but I had no idea that the plastic was also a possible contributor. It makes you feel so powerless to witness all this environmental stuff going on. 😞 And then you think people are taking that extra oestrogen back into their bodies. Scary stuff.

I used to dissect the fish while taking practice exams at school and organs after dissecting among others
Vesica natatoria (swim bladder), there are two parts of the anterior and posterior, glossy white color, is located adjacent and parallel to the vertebral cavity, useful for sinking raised fish. Channels to insert and remove the air that extends from the esophagus (windpipe) to the posterior part of the vesica natatoria called ductus pneumaticus (pneumatocysticus). Mesonephros (kidney - ren), located between the 2 parts of swimming or clinging bubbles vertebrae. Pronephros (kidney - ren) in front of the vesica natatoriaCor (heart) is located in the ventral part, note the sinus venosus, atrium, ventricle, and truncus arteriosus arteriosusGonad bulbous, yellow or white. In the female contains the egg, on which the male contains sperm. The layout of the gonads usually in the ventral side of pneumatocyst. Intestinum (intestine), seem convoluted belit. Hepar (liver - liver), redness. Vesica fellea (gall bladder) dark green located next dekster ventral lobe of the liver.

Hy @suesa
I think everyone has dissected fish. And I'm one of those people who have dissected fish: D
Responding to the matter of chemical content in our sea it is certain, a lot of waste plastic discharged in our sea.
But last week I never went to the sea with local people fishermen to see directly fish offshore.
I think that the fish that are close to the land of the citizens' residence may be very disturbed. But unlike the fish that live in the middle of the sea, I think they have not been contaminated with chemically active ingredients.
