Sometimes the Silver is SHINY...

And Sometimes It's Been Through The Ringer...

IMG_5460.JPG

This "old" ASE falls into that "been through the ringer" category... The brownish coloring is oxidation (the silver reacting with air/chemicals in the environment it was stored in) Some would call this "toning", I would just call it a tarnished coin.
In some instances toning looks really cool and can take on blue/purple or even rainbow colors. In this instance I think it just looks like crap (almost literally like someone smeared poo on the coin), but the price was right so here it is!

The reverse looks a little better and has a little bit more defined purplish coloring. Still not as good looking as some "toners" I've seen, but more presentable in my opinion.

Toning to me is one of those things that either looks really cool and enhances the look of a coin or round or just makes it look like trash that needs to be cleaned up to be presentable.

Do my fellow Steemians hold any opinions on toning? Do you do anything to prevent or perhaps even promote toning on any of your stuff?

What say you!?

Sort:

I like it shiny and toned. Think they are two completely different looks but each has its place

Yea, I mean silver is silver and I really like a well toned piece, but this ASE won't be fetching any kind of premium like a BU or tastefully toned ASE of the same year might!

I have some ASE stored in air tights and some in Whitman books. The ones in the capsules stay nice and clean. The ones stored in books seem to tone faster. Both look good in my opinion. You could make that one your pocket silver.

I don't have any toned pieces yet, I tend to go for the shiny pieces! I should get one to tone tho, it has a different look.

As a numismatist I always tried to buy coins untoned just because I liked the shinny ones...As a stacker I don't care. I only care about the silver/gold content.

Nice coin, I like coins that are toned. The tone has to be attractive like rainbow tone on silver and blue steele on nickel. The regular antique tone is nice too because is brings out the small details on circulated coin.

Yea I like a well done artificial antique tone or a nice natural antique tone for sure.

When coins are antiqued or have a rainbowish toning it looks cool otherwise clean away brother.
