Visiting London: adventure with LNER train
Last week I had few days off, there were few annual leave days that I had to use otherwise they will expire, together with weekend it was almost a whole week, which was great.
We decided to use the chance and visit our family in London, weekend fitted well because that is the time when everyone including the kids were free. The time passes that is why we try to see each other when possible.
When we think about this journey we always find a dilemma how to travel:
- car
- plane, or
- train
The distance between Kirkcaldy and London 445 miles and you can see that with car it will be about 7 hours, with place of course, it will be only about an hour but then we have to travel to airport and usually it takes couple of hours from check in and start up. Then we still need to take an underground to reach our family home.
When we checked the trains then it was one that was departing from our town directly to main train station King's Cross. From our home to train station is just 10 minute by foot, that is why the decision was made we take a train.
When we booked our train initially, we decided to book First Class, because last time when we travelled with economy class, the train we booked was cancelled and we had to travel on the next one and without reserved places, that meant that we had to find unreserved places to sit and it was very crowded so, the whole trip was chasing the places.
That is why we decided to take First Class with reserved sits.
Just about a week before the departure we received a message from train company and were told that the train that we booked was again cancelled due to strikes of Rail staff and we had to rebook to any other one.
So, there were two other options:
- either to rebook on day before, but then we had to rebook hotel too
- another option was to travel earlier at 5:50 AM, but then from us to Edinburgh and from there to take LNER train
We decided to travel earlier and with one stop.
Of course, we had to wake up early but then we new that later we can have a nap in train during 5 hours. Our sits were reserved and once we got we received a menu and were offered some hot drinks
This is our breakfast beacon roll and coffee, that was very delicious especially considering the fact that we did not have any breakfast at home.
Thank you, friend!

This post reminds me that the US needs better public transportation :)
I believe due to good roads there are more buses and card between the cities. Over here in Europe Railway was always very special, very exclusive in the past with nice separate cabins still we see in Night sleeper trains, but the snack and food trolley was always there, of course the variety of food can vary. I love the experience of travelling with train, especially over night travel :)
Если сравнивать ваш поезд снаружи с нашими поездами, что получится сравненеи как гепарда с лошадью-тяжеловозом.
Да снаружи они смотрятся как из будущего немного проще внутри :)
Your story reminds me that I, too, should take such a train journey. It's been a long time since I've travelled, and I've loved it since I was a kid. Certainly these trips have their own charm and romance :)
Recently due to more comfortable travel we prefer train to plane. Also we do not need to be at train station early and no custom control, that makes the whole waiting shorter. Also we love to take some presents so need couple of suitcases and that is no problem on train. So try, you also might like it :)
