Rahm Captures 2nd Career Win at CareerBuilder Challenge

The PGA Tour started their West Coast Swing this week in LaQuinta, CA where PGA West Stadium Course played host to the CareerBuilder Challenge.

Jon Rahm jumped out to a hot start in the first round with eight birdies and an eagle to finish with a ten-under par, 62 to take an early one stroke lead over Andrew Landry, Jason Kokrak, and Austin Cook who all posted nine-under par, 63s.

In the second round, Landry made a move on Rahm carding a bogey-free 65, powered by seven birdies. Rahm shot a respectable five-under par 67 to stay within one shot of Landry’s lead while Kokrak matched Rahm’s 67 to take sole possession of third place.

Austin Cook made the biggest move on Moving Day recording seven birdies, an eagle, and a bogey to take a one stroke lead over Landry and Martin Pillar who shot two and five-under par, respectively. Rahm and Scott Piercy rounded out the top five, trailing Cook by only two, heading into the final round.

Leader Austin Cook got off to a rocky start, shooting a two-over par 38 on his front nine, en route to a disappointing three-over par 75, squandering his chances at a victory. Rahm posted a five-under 67 to take the lead heading into the clubhouse, with Landry on the 18th hole, one stroke back, needing a birdie to tie to force a playoff. Landry stuck his 147-yard short iron to eight feet, finishing off the hole sinking the putt and forcing a playoff with Rahm.

Landry and Rahm exchanged three pars in a row before they headed into the fourth hole of sudden death. On the final playoff hole, Rahm and Landry both had 12-foot birdie putts. Rahm, played first, striking his downhill, left to right putt into the hole for birdie. Landry needed to make his similar length right to left putt to extend the playoff but missed his attempt to the right, sealing the victory for Rahm. The victory marked Rahm’s second victory on tour, both in the state of California.
