2018 Winter Olympic Update: Day 1 Medal Count

Day 1 of the 2018 Winter Olympics was a good one with plenty of action for the world to see. PyeongChang, South Korea has been a dynamite host thus far and the games looks great. There were 5 events that gave out medals on the opening day. The Netherlands and Norway are tied for the early lead in the ultimate quest to win the most amount of medals.
The Netherlands won an impressive 4 medals on Saturday. They had 1 Gold medal, 2 Silver, and 1 Bronze. Carlijn Actereekte took home the Gold in the women’s 3,000 meter Speedskating. Ireen Wust took Silver and Antoinette De Jong took Bronze as the talented trio swept the event for their home country.
Norway also won 4 medals on the day but were not able to win Gold. Marte Olsbu won the Silver medal in the women’s 7.5 kilometer sprint in the Biathlon. Marit Bjoergen too won Silver in her event, the women’s Skiathlon. The men’s normal hill in Ski Jumping gave Norway their other two medals of the day when Johann Andre won Silver and Robert Johansson won the Bronze.
Germany was the big winner in terms of the Gold medal count on the day. They were the only country to win more than one Gold. Laura Dahlmeier won the top honor in the women’s 7.5 kilometer sprint in the Biathlon. Andreas Wellinger was the first German man to win Gold when he won the men’s normal hill in Ski Jumping.
The host country, South Korea, got their first Gold medal of the 2018 Winter Games in dramatic fashion. Lim Hyo-jun not only won the Gold, but he set the Olympic record with his time of 2:10.485. He will be an instant star and well deserved celebrity in PyeongChang and across the globe.
Sweden was the other country to stand at the top of the podium on Saturday. Charlotte Kalla won Gold in the women’s skiathlon in Cross-Country Skiing.
The Czech Republic, Finland, and the Olympic Athletes of Russia each finished the first day of the 2018 Winter Olympics with a Bronze medal. The action gets started with day 2 in just a few hours. I can’t wait to see how the day unfolds and who can rack up the most Gold! We will be back will a full medal count recap every day!
