2018 Winter Olympic Feature: The Bobsled

The 2018 Winter Olympics are rapidly approaching. They will get started on February 9th and will feature some of the world’s most talented athletes. The Games will be held in PyeongChang, South Korea, and will last for 2 weeks. The current estimate has 92 countries participating.

There will be fifteen sports with one hundred and two events. The bobsled event is one of my favorite to watch each Winter Olympics. It is a team sport that is high in speed and intensity. The bobsled was first invented in the 1870’s. It is one of the most dangerous sports at the Games because of the velocity of the bobsleds as they race down the ice track. There have been 16 deaths since 1907.

Germany has the all time medal lead in this event with 18 total medals including 8 gold medals. Switzerland is in second with 15 total medals including 5 golds. The United States trails behind in third place with 11 total medals including 4 golds.
