Walking as an exercise
The Importance of exercise for healthy living could not be over-stressed. Regular exercise brings long life and prevents sickness such as heart ailments. However, rarely do we think of walking as an exercise of the highest order.
Walking puts all the muscles of our body to work and regular walking most effectively brings down excess body weight. The value of walking is it is a mild form of exercise which does not cause exhaustion or the excess use of muscles. So, it is an exercise which could be easily controlled anyone, depending on his age and requirements. Further, the danger of injury is almost non-existent.
Research has been done on the effects of this form of exercise. It has been found that walking rids the walker of physical and fatigue. It has also been found to be an means of getting rid of excess weight specially when done after the mid-day meal. Walking is preferred to running as the latter carries with it the danger of overwork in muscles.
As an exercise 45 to 60 minutes of brisk or fairly brisk walking is recommended. But even a 20-minute walk would be very helpful. What is more important is the regularity of the exercise. May do it everyday or 4 times a week. Walker has the added advantage of breathing good fresh air when the exercise is done in the sea or a park.
Walking in a beautiful surrounding, for example in a country lane, would be most enjoyable. Certainly, it would have an invigorating effect both on mind and body and amount to both mental and physical exercise. This may not be possible for the pity folk as they do not find much opportunity of having a walk in a beautiful environment. As talking or a short rest during a walk does not have any bad effect, this exercise done in company of a friend or two, preferably in a beautiful environment would be more pleasant and rewarding than any other activity with all the advantages of a wholesome physical exercise. On this account, our underestimation of the value of walking has been to our own disadvantage. Lets love it and take to it. It is the best means of exercise we have at hand.
