Thrifting Snipes - Buy Low, Sell High - 7 Items Bought For $135, Sold For $2,056 (15.2x Return) $1 turned into $203?! DIY Income Is Real!!

in #thrifting5 years ago (edited)

If it's realistically possible to turn $135 into $2,056 revenue, why not try? The truth is that you can if you put some effort in at the right thrift stores. It's worth your time if you could use some extra cash flow at negligible risk.

Am I lucky? HELL NO. I've developed a sharp eye, understand supply & demand, and am super efficient. I know how to find value instantly, where most customers overlook it for days. Anyone can do this with some practice!

I have thousands of examples I'll continue to show so people can get ideas, motivation, and hopefully take their first steps to explore the resale business. There is great money to be made for fun or for sustainable income.

This never feels like work. It's always fun and rewarding when you consistently make good decisions/investments.

Give it a try! Go to a few thrift stores ones day and poke around. Learn, explore, profit!

If you don't have time to thrift, perhaps someone will have some of these types of things around their homes they can now properly value to sell.

Some high-profit margin flips:

High-end printer bought for $16.32, sold for $715 a few miles away.

Commercial culinary software bought for $1.08, sold for $203.50.

New Panasonic transcriber bought for $27.21, sold for $253.

New Sony microcassette recorder bought for $21.50, sold for $230.

She-Ra DVD set bought for $34.30, sold to Australia for $245.

Rare auction catalog set bought for $31.50, sold books 1-2 (not shown) for $165, and books 3-6 sold for $150 ($315 total). Yes, these are simply books used for Christie's auctions.

Tennis racquet bought for $3.28, sold for $95.

I've sold dozens of tennis racquets in this profit zone, and many up to ~$230! It's an often overlooked niche when high-end discontinued items are in high end as replacements.

If you have anything sealed new that's an older product, look it up online to see what it's selling for. You may be surprised that you've had a gem sitting right under your nose for years.

I'll keep showing that you can make money on the side or for financial independence if you simply get involved and start hustling around some thrift stores on a regular basis for fun.

Revenue is before fees and shipping. Most items don't cost much at all to ship, and my store subscription gives me good fee discounts.

Ask any questions!

Nice!

I've been hitting the local auctions and getting some nice pieces. Picked up a vintage safecracking kit for $9.25 + fees and it sold in eBay auction for over $400!

Today I picked up a bunch of small aircraft parts. Stuff like a color weather radar and new in the box brake assemblies. Should be great once the right buyer comes along as they are niche.

Wow great pull for an auction. I've never been to one. How old was the kit?

I once found 2 airplane cockpit aviation lights from the 1930's new in box for $3 each and sold them for $200 each. I think that one went to an aviation museum. Aircraft parts are great money.

Oh, hard to tell how old the safecracking kit was. Looked like maybe the 70's or early 80's?

You got some really nice finds there. When I go looking I typically stay around books or video games and consoles. Been scouring Ebay for the last few days and snagged some things for dirt cheap. Just got to see if they can be fixed up and sold.

I'm a big fan of the video games. GameCube finds are my favorite. Consoles tend to be overpriced here, and books are often not worth the effort to browse through for resale in stores here, but there's definitely money to be made.

Re: books, I usually glance for any larger complete sets or textbooks, and then move along in the stores. I tend to find a lot of valuable books in my city's recycling on the curbs (I also make upcycling posts for this stuff).

I generally gravitate toward electronics and household items, and I avoid clothes/shoes as much as possible. The key, as you know, is to hunt in areas you're passionate/knowledgeable about or interested in as that keeps it fun and efficient. Video games are the most fun because you can take them home to test play and relive some fun memories.

Exactly. I try to keep the books I pickup to a minimum, but I like adding some authors to my collection if I see something for a good price. I just know that as time goes on, vintage games and consoles are becoming a bit more expensive to collect as nostalgia grows.

In my area we just have a bunch of antique shops and it feels impossible to check them all in a day as there is usually one or two per street in town. We don't seem to have many thrift shops or garage sales in the area, but I was not about to pass up 2 Wiis for $8 that more than likely just need some cleaning.

If I can clean those up and sell them, then I'll definitely be looking to using some of that money to get back into thrifting.

I do a lot of upcycling. Feel free to check out those posts to see what I find for free on my city's curbs. I often find video game consoles and remotes with games. My city is overflowing with high quality stuff wealthy/lazy people toss out in the recycling versus selling or donating it. I try to salvage as much as I can, even bringing some things to thrift stores as a donation!

Sounds like we're on the same page here! Good luck cleaning up those Wiis. I have 2 or 3 here from the curbs I still have to test, but they should be good based on the nature of how I found them with all of their accessories.

I've checked out your other posts and all I can say is I wish I was in your area. Haha. You have some good pickups from what I have seen.

Word of advice if you get around to testing the Wiis and aren't doing so already. Don't sell them for parts or repair if only the disk drive isn't working. As long as the console boots, can use a controller, connect to the internet, is version 4.3, can read an sd card and has working usb ports, you can increase their value a bit by modding them pretty easily.

You can check out the guide at: https://wii.guide/

I'll probably make a post or video about it once I get my Wiis in. But as long as you're able to mod them, there isn't a need for a disk drive. Emulators, Wii and Gamecube games can be booted off the sd, flashdrive or external hard drive directly, assuming you or whoever has their own backups.

Dropping by to say don't stop posting these. I know I've said it before. I find it fascinating the value others apply to things I would consider "junk".

If you've ever seen a grandmother in distress about her broken vintage vacuum, all stars would align to reinforce how this value is realized. Thanks for the consistent support.

It's amazing the Sony Microcassette recorder sold for $230. I would have thought that was outdated technology.

I remember that I actually gave the guy $20 off or so on a negotiation. They can sell for a little more. For some reason, sealed microcassette recorders or some older Sony products sell super well. Perhaps it's collectors or people seeking replacements/gifts. I'm with you, but there's always demand for sealed discontinued items for one reason or another.

I've sold sold a few like this, the last one (not the one above) actually had its mechanical rubber belts deteriorated inside after the customer opened the new packaging, so it can be a catch 22 at times.

I find this all so amazing. learning and knowing the values has sure paid off for you.
