교가리 느티나무

신령한 기운이 있어서 범도 가까이 오지 못했다고 전해진 교가리 느티나무.

강원도 삼척시 근덕면에 가면 최소 천년은 족히 될 것 같은 '강원도 기념물 제14호 교가리 느티나무'가 있습니다.

안내판에 의하면 확실한 나이는 알 수 없지만 사연을 지닌 나무임은 분명해 보입니다.

고려 공민왕 4년 1355에 큰불에 타 죽을 뻔했는데, 한 스님이 소나무와 느릅나무 뿌리로 이 나무의 구멍을 채우고 진흙을 덮어 살렸다고 하네요.

교가리 느티나무

교가리 느티나무는 높이 12m, 둘레 9.5m에 이르는 큰 나무이며, 확실한 나이는 알 수 없다.

원래 높이가 25m였는데 1947년 폭풍우에 부러져 옆으로 널리 퍼진 모양이 되었다.

전하는 말에 교가리 느티나무는 고려 공민왕 4년 1355에 큰불에 타 죽을 뻔했는데, 한 스님이 소나무와 느릅나무 뿌리로 이 나무의 구멍을 채우고 진흙을 덮어 살렸다고 한다.

그 뒤 조선 고종 22년 1885에 큰불이 나 이 나무는 또 한 번 죽을 위기에 처하였다.

이때 옛날에 스님이 했던 방법을 따르자 다시 살아났다고 한다.

또한 이 나무에는 신령한 기운이 있어서 범도 가까이 오지 못했다고 전해진다.

마을 사람들은 해마다 연말이면 이 나무에 제를 올려 마을의 안녕을 빌고 있다.

The Zelkova Tree in Gyoga-ri is a large tree with a height of 12 meters and a girth of 9.5 meters,
whose age is unknown. It used to be 25 meters tall, but it was flattened considerably and pushed
outwards by a typhoon in 1947.

It is said that after the tree was almost destroyed by a major fire in 1355, the 4th year of the reign of King Gongmin of the Goryeo Dynasty, a monk resuscitated it by filling the holes in its trunk with pine and elm roots and then covering the entire tree with mud.

When the tree again faced total destruction by fire in 1885, the 22nd year of the reign of King Gojong of the Joseon Dynasty, the same method was used to bring the tree back to life.

It is also said that this tree has a mysterious spirit that can repel even the most fearsome tiger.

The villagers of Gyoga-ri hold a memorial service for the tree at the end of each year to pray for the peace of the village.
