Hama walang sangit akan menyerang pada waktu tanaman padi sudah memasuki fase masak susu. Hama ini akan menyerang pada bulir padi dengan menghisap cairan yang ada di padi sehingga bisa mengakibatkan padi yang dihasilkan hampa, berkerut, berwarna cokelat dan rasanya kurang enak. Dengan serangan parah hasil panen padi akan menjadi jelek dan menurunkan produktivitas hasil panen. Pengendalian bisa dilakukan dengan mengumpulkan dan memusnahkan telur walang sangit serta dengan melepas musuh alami seperti jangkrik dan laba-laba.
