What is Star Citizen?
Star Citizen is an online first person universe that is the brain-child of developer Chris Roberts. His company, Cloud Imperium Games, is responsible for the development of Star Citizen. It is breaking new ground in the MMO industry, with unprecedented advances in physics, realism, combat, and many other areas. Star Citizen’s intricate multi-crew interaction, zero-G combat, diversity in career paths, dynamic supply-and-demand economy, and overall dedication to perfection, have set it far above any existing games. It is a revolutionary project, designed on a level that no game has reached so far!
What’s more? Star Citizen is funded by the players. To date, over 1,875,000 players have funded the game, raising more than $159,000,000. Making Star Citizen, the largest crowdfunded game in history!
Star Citizen’s initial Kickstarter launched in 2012, making this almost 5 years since development started on the game. With no publisher and less funding than mainstream titles, Star Citizen has already achieved fantastic results. It sports a hangar module where you can view your spaceships up close, a flight simulation called Arena Commander to test out your ships, an FPS battleground called Star Marine, a planetside cityscape to try out shopping and see the sights, and a test universe that combines the other modes and gives you free reign of a solar system, even including NPC missions for players to try out.
Currently Star Citizen offers a diverse range of ships and packages for various levels of support. When the game launches the intention is to remove availability for these items, outside the game. They will only be available through playing the game itself. Starter packs are available for those who just want to give a basic level of support to the game and get a ship and copy of the game, when it launches. They are currently priced at $45.
There will also be a single-player campaign that allows players to take the place of fighter pilots from the famous Squadron 42 and make their own story. Players will be able to make their own choices, build their own relationships, and their actions will decide whether their crewmates live or die. The Squadron 42 campaign will feature co-operative play, so players can bring their friends into their campaign for backup. Upon completion of the campaign, players will receive rewards based on their level of success and will carry these rewards into the multiplayer universe.
Star Citizen currently has no fixed release date and is adding modules as they are developed. There is expected to be a large update (Alpha 3.0), within the next several months, bringing a variety of new content to the universe, including: planetary landing, character customization, upgraded item interaction, redesigned maps and new locations, an entirely new mission system, updated shopping and cargo mechanics, new vehicles and equipment, an insurance system, and a host of other improvements and additions.
If you decide to pledge your support for the game, be aware that there are referral codes that will give you and your referrer, a 5000 UEC bonus in the game. I am including mine below, but should you choose not to use mine, please use a referral code from someone in the Star Citizen community. It helps them out and it will help you out as well.

All I can say here is that i WISH i had time to play games like this. I spent most of high school playing Everquest on a dial up modem - in retrospect it's amazing that even worked! These days with a job and a family (and SteemIt) I can't really play anything that requires more than a few minutes at a time.
Yeah, I definitely understand that. If you do ever decide to join, let me know and we can meet up in-game. The full release will allow characters to double as NPCs when players log out, so a lot of us plan to leave a character on our friends' ships and just warp into them as needed. That way people could mostly pop in and out of the game as needed.
