southers' Film Review: Midsommar (2019), A Swedish Horror Film
What is the most terrifying horror movie? Some people say that they dare not look directly at the blood. Some people say that it is a ghost that happens unexpectedly. Others say that it is ubiquitous darkness and depression. But from my side, all of the above are still in the range of routines. What I want to talk is the story takes place by daylight, with no ghosts from beginning to end. Moreover, there are only a little portion of brutal killings. However, you can feel scary while you are watching this movie.
Dani is the female lending actress of the film. The film shows her inner fragility through her uneasiness at the beginning. She is extremely insecure, and afraid of unfortunate things happening to she. When the tragedy comes, the powerlessness and embarrassment, the audience can feel the same through the screen. Her boyfriend who originally wanted to break up under the advice of a friend, saw his girlfriend Dani suffering such a big pain. He decided to stay with her. It is not a matter of love, but a treatment of due diligence. Her relatives are all passed away. She can be defined as "orphans" in the film, knowing that her boyfriend was invited to travel to a friend's home in Sweden. Despite the unwillingness of her heart, she still smiled and promised her boyfriend to go with him.

When they first entered the resort in Sweden, they did not know that the sacrifices were already in preparation. They only had this beautiful scenery in their eyes, as well as the seductive customs and intoxication. Imagine how such a fresh and pleasing picture might be a horror film? Looking at the girls in white, playing like an angel in front of you, how can you not love such a tourist destination?
When the tourism project goes deeper and deeper, when you participate in the Cliff Festival, you see the 70-year-old man committing suicide by jumping off the cliff. The friends around them are always inexplicably missing. The food you eat has pubic hair and menstrual blood. Most of you will find that things are wrong. This is simply a cult group, but it is too late to escape. The choice left to you is nothing more than obedience and death. Even more chilling is that friends who recommend you are also one of them.
The director is good at using the lens language to describe the floating and upcoming dangers of the characters, and to quote a lot of mysterious symbols to build a cult organization, or a small social system. Everything will be understood by a unique cultural approach. You can only choose to understand as much as possible. This is a way of delaying your death, and those who are determined to disapprove will be "cleared" by the resort people as a sacrifice with purpose of ensuring the purity of the community.
The director has bold and innovative ideas. Most of the shots in this film are filled with strong sunlight, which makes the horror type that was originally defined in the dark tones lose meaning. Such fresh tones are defined in the category of terror. It seems a bit out of place, but it is also seen that the director wants to find new ways to create new tricks. Let the audience ignore the traditional horror film routines, and then feel the delicate changes of the characters' emotions, and guide audience to experience Sweden. All in all, it is an excellent horror film.
My Score is 9/10
