The last male or when the rhinos disappear!

in #nature6 years ago

He was called Sudan. They called him The Last Male. Because he really was - the last male northern white rhinoceros on Earth. He was 45 years old, the last of them with poor health. From March 19, 2018, there is no such specimen on our planet. There are only two other females. His daughter and granddaughter. With this, the rhinoceros of the Northern White subspecies are actually extinct.

In recent years, the Last Man lived under constant armed security in the Kenyan Reserve of All-Peyita, which kept him from poachers. He was born in Sudan in 1973-74. When he was a year or two, he was captured and taken to the Králové Zoo in then Czechoslovakia. He lives there until 2009, when he was transported back to Africa. His last brothers in the wilderness were seen in 2006.

This news is particularly bad. No matter how many people realize this. An entire animal subspecies disappears with this being. Scientists and conservationists still have some hopes for an in vitro semen fluid procedure from The Last Male to a Surrogate Mother - a Southern White Rhinoceros. But it should be known that when the animal's research begins with this goal, it was already old enough, in poor health, and its seminal fluid is not good enough. The only thing left now is the hope ...

Rhinos are the largest terrestrial mammals after the elephants

They are called "tanks with legs". Amazing creatures. For millions of years, they have been living on our planet. Only five species are known today - white, black, Indian, Sumatran and Javanese. The first two live in Africa, the rest live in Asia. According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), there are only 67 Javanese and 100 Sumatran rhinoceroses left in the world.
In Africa, the situation is also not much more flourishing. Yes, the rhinos are still counted in thousands, but most wild specimens today are found on the territory of just 4 countries - South Africa, Namibia, Zimbabwe and Kenya. Black rhinos number only about 5,000, while whites are more - about 20,000. Only a century ago, however, they were critically endangered - there were only 100th specimens in the wild. Their number is considerably larger only because of environmentalists' struggle to protect this species. And this is one of their greatest successes.

Why are rhinos so important?

WWF states that, of course, they are an important link to the past on Earth. But more importantly, they play an essential and indispensable role in their environment. White rhinos, for example, destroy large amounts of vegetation. This shapes the specific African relief and, furthermore, contributes to the healthy balance in nature, thus creating more favorable living conditions for other species. Not to mention that among these species we are - humans. Being one of the five largest on the Black continent, rhinos give livelihood to the local population where they meet. After all, there is no tourist who does not want to see this majestic creature. Not to mention that among these species we humans are. Why are they disappearing?

The main problem is poaching. It marks an absolute boom in the last decade - since 2008, its growth is 1000%! The price of the horns is constantly growing, making it a valuable symbol of wealth among certain social groups. Intruders are well equipped - with helicopters and modern weapons. It is increasingly difficult to resist them. And the people who guard the rhinoceros in nature parks are real rangers who constantly risk their lives. According to WWF, every month a 100-rhinoceros victim falls on poachers. It is believed that the horn of this animal has beneficial properties for medicine. Although it is essentially just keratin - the same substance from which our nails are made. However, demand is immense. The main market for rhinoceros horns is Vietnam. There is an idea that it is a miraculous tool for cancer treatment. It is used even to fight the symptoms of a hangover.
The worst, however, is that it does not help at all. And indirectly even can harm, because people are not treated with effective drugs, believing that the horn will help them.

On top of that, global warming makes things even more serious.

Rhinoceroses need certain conditions to give life to their little ones. And with climate change, these conditions are also changing. That's why conservationists worry that the risk of successful breeding and breeding in the wild is getting bigger.

Therefore, more than ever, serious measures are needed to protect this extraordinary animal species. At least what each of us can and should do - knowing that a horn of rhinoceros does not help against any disease. And by no means buying such a thing. Demand has to decrease. No, it must surely disappear to give the rhinoceros a chance. Otherwise we will lose them. And with them each of us is losing a piece of himself. Part of the future of their children. Whether he realizes it or not...
