Mushroom Monday - Grow Your Own
To keep #mushroommonday going by @balticbadger I'm planning on growing some indoor mushroom kits over the winter. Here's a few shots of the kits I grew last winter.
First here's a lions mane kit that gave me around 8 blooms. This kit produced quite a bit of mushrooms. These are really tasty.
Here's what happened with most of the lions mane. The texture is much like crab meat so you can actually use it in crab cakes etc. as well.
Another kit I tried was a pink oyster kit. These are super easy to grow and one kit can give you many blooms. I took a timelapse of their growth here https://youtu.be/CI0-J_ewjKY
These mushrooms actually have a mild salmony taste and add a good bit of flavor to anything you cook them with. The only word of caution is to harvest them early before they spore, the spores smell like ammonia. I learned the hard way when I came home to a stunk up the house.
I have tried to grow king oyster kits twice but for some reason they never even pinned. King oysters must require a picky set of circumstances to grow so i'll just stick to getting these guys from the korean market.
Another kit I have tried is the blue oyster mushrooms. These guys are a bit tricky to grow to full size. They dry out easily so the need a good humidity tent setup. Other than that they are pretty easy to grow and have multiple blooms.
Their strange blue caps are interesting to watch grow.
This batch became a bit tangled and a few dried out as I forgot to put the humidity tent back on for a couple hours :-(.
As they mature they start losing their blue caps and turn white. Perhaps this year i'll get more photogenic examples of these guys.
In the meantime keep an eye out for velvet foots aka winter mushrooms. These can grow all the way up into past the first snow. If you can't find any go to an asian supermarket and look for enokitake mushrooms. They are the domesticated versions of these and are skinny white long mushrooms. To get them to grow like that they are grown in a high co2 setup. Oxygen makes them turn orange and plump like the ones above. Happy #mushroommonday :-)

Those blue oysters are really cool looking! This seems like an amazing hobby one that I will certainly try. Like I said can't wait to see this year's batch. Heading over to YouTube to check the video out now!

For some reason my blue oysters decided not to grow out the sides of the block. So they kind of look different than they should as they are growing against gravity out of the top. My pink oyster block from this last year decided to sprout again even after sitting dormant for 6 months so its a really hearty mushroom to start out with.
I'm impressed! Wonderful mushroom gardening and great photos, too!
Thanks, its a fun hobby and cheaper than getting those same kinds in the store. This year i'll try to get a hen of the woods kit. Hopefully they are easy to grow.

I tried growing from a kit years ago and didn't have any success. I was discouraged and never tried again. Maybe I should make another attempt!
What kind were they? Maybe try pink oysters they are super easy to grow.

I think the ones I attempted were oysters that came from Burpees. It was the first time I had ever seen kits offered and I got one for my uncle for Christmas, too. His didn't grow either.
Hmm maybe they stayed in storage too long. Eventually without moisture the myceleum will die. The kits i get on amazon usually have a replacement option from the seller if they don't bloom.

I was happy with plain ordinary oysters. I thought they were quite tasty.
The king oysters have a bit richer taste and the texture is more dense like those thick japanese noodles. Fortunately i can just go to the Korean supermarket to get them.

Sounds good.
They are really good in hot pot soups. There's a place called happy lamb hot pot here where you order a boiling soup and different things to cook in it at your table. The king oysters are really good in there.
You make it look so easy to grow your own mushroom!
Its easy with a kit you just have to mist it a few times a day then put the humidity plastic covering over them.

How do you choose which kind of mushroom to grow?
I try and pick kits that i've never tried before. For indoor growing most the commercially available kits grow easily.

Hmm, now I'm envious of the variety. This is something I'd love to try at home but the climate is pretty unsuitable
You just need a spray bottle and a plastic bag and a dark coolish place.
