Gender equality has been a very serious issue, especially in this part of the world. As Nigerians, we have cultures in which gender equality is not considered something that should be mentioned or talked about as it is seen as taboo.

This is the reason, why on many occasions, we see marginalization when it comes to handling public positions and many others. Women are not also allowed to speak in some public places because they are not recognized. In today's contest, I will be discussing why gender equality is necessary in our society via the following contest tips.

What does gender equality entail, and what are the advantages?

Gender equality entails that everyone i.e., male and female be treated equally in society. This means that everyone is equal irrespective of gender as a person. So if anything is to be done, there should be nothing like this person is a girl hence she can not participate or this person is a man and for that reason, he can not participate.

So everyone is entitled to be a participant of an event and has an equal share of the responsibility. So any man or woman who is to take responsibility must do so without considering their gender. People are seen as the same.

If for instance, a man and a woman go out for lunch they can both make the payment together without the woman wanting the man to make the payment because he is the man. In African settings, women help to marginalize themselves by giving all burdens to men when it comes to expenses and that is why gender equality is hard here.

Some of the advantages associated with gender equality are

• Gender equality gives room for everyone to be taken along when going to any public function

• Gender equality allows both males and females to recognize each other and value everyone accordingly.

• Gender equality helps to remove marginalization between men and women.

• Gender equality makes everyone see themselves as equal and that helps to eliminate pride and ego.

Is gender equality crucial for all people, not just women?

I think gender equality is very crucial for everyone and not for just women alone. As you may have known, everyone both male and female at some point gets marginalized based on the situation they find themselves in. So if you find yourself in an unpleasant case, you will cry out for this equality when you are suppressed by the opposite gender.

So everyone is affected depending on the situation you find yourself self. Currently, women feel it more especially those who are in some part of the world where they don't consider gender equality as something very necessary. Though at some point we see that everyone is involved.

What are your thoughts on gender equality, specifically concerning the circumstances in your country?

In Nigeria, gender equality is still a big issue at the moment and that is why people find it difficult here to allow women to participate in several occasions. So in essence, here in Nigeria, they are gradually taking the teaching of gender equality but there is still marginalisation because women are not completely free.

In some Communities, till this time, a lot of women are not allowed to participate in public affairs this means that if they are called up for anything they exclude the women because they believe that a woman's place is in the kitchen.

This hinders women from participating in anything related to public functions because traditionally, the men are the custodians of the culture whereas the women stay at home to cook, take care of the home, and then care for the children.

How to educate our children to understand this issue?

To educate our children to understand these issues, one has to start from the early stage building their minds up to see everyone as being equal and that what a man can do a woman can do as well. If they grow up having this thought in their mind then it will be easier for them to understand and pass to the next generation the importance of gender equality.

So if you teach a child well, he or she won't forget it because the foundation has been built already. A popular Nigerian singer says "What a man can do a woman can do also hence if you do me I do you God no go vex." This means that a man and a woman are considered equal.
