John J. Ford Jr Collection Potential...

I want to provide a unique perspective on the John J. Ford Jr. Collection. To give some history on the subject. JF Jr. was an american numismatitist from California. He was known for his extensive collection of coins, metals, currency, and ingots. A true premier expert in the world of numimatics. At the time of his death his collection was valued over 55 million dollars.

Along with all the good information, comes some negative accusations as well. It is believed that JF Jr. used his expertise to produce counterfiet coins and ingots. With his believed to be partner in crime Paul Franklin by his side. They set off on a mission to cover the western United States. In search of rare coins and ingots. What they dicovered many had never seen before. This lead some creditable people to believe they were forging fakes and creating fantasy stories to accompany them. Till this day, there has been no confirmation of the truth....

From 2003 - 2005 many coins, medals, currency, and ingots of JF Jr. personal collection were catalogued and auctioned off by Stacks and Bowers. The auction house sold off the collection for tens of millions.

In today's market those items are now commanding an incredible premium. I came across a few coins on ebay recently. One can be seen below. It is a penny with an asking price of $22,000. You will notice PCGS holder acknowledges its correlation to the JF Jr. collection.

JF Jr. was a fanatic about poured gold and silver ingots. It was a true passion of his. At the time that market was untouched. He was able to accumulate many rare ingots since he was one of the few seeking them out.

JF Jr. passion for poured ingots would lead you to believe that they are some of the most desired items amongst collectors today. Oddly enough, that does not seem to be the case. Over the past couple years several of the silver ingots have become available. They have sold anywhere from $800 - $2500 each. That is a small fraction of the asking price on the penny shown above!! The current vintage silver market is on certainly on fire. BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE THE MARKET HAS REVEALED ITS TRUE POTENTIAL BEHIND THE JF. Jr. INGOTS. I believe at some point in my life these ingots will be on display at museaums all over the country. The provenance behind them is incredible. This was a significant event in the history of numimatics.
