The Different UNIQUE Transportation of the Philippines
Traveling in the Philippines is a unique experience. A tourist can encounter several modes of transportation and will be surprised to see the ingenuity brought by the Filipinos in the transport industry. Getting around places can be tough especially in remote areas where the road isn't developed yet and the destination is too far. If you're a traveler you need to know which transport would suit you best and if you want, try the Filipino traveling experience.
These are the different kinds of transportation in the Philippines:
1. Philippine Jeepney

Touted as the "King of the Road", the Jeepney is the most common of all. You can see it mostly anywhere in the cities and towns. The US Military Jeep was introduced in the Philippines by the Americans during World War II.

Due to the vast surplus of it after the war, the Filipinos modified it and developed it to accommodate passengers. It was then called Jeepney, combining the words of "jeep" and "jitney", in which passengers are seated very close to each other.

The Jeepney's designs depend on the regions in the Philippines, some are usually colorful adorned with ornaments. Passengers are seated on 2 parallel long benches facing each other. It usually seats 18 up to 30 passengers as long as the driver requires it, as they say "There's always room for one more!" even if it's too crowded already. Some may even sit at the roof in bunches.

Fare price: $ 0.015 to $2 depending on the succeeding kilometers.
2. Tricycle
The Philippine tricycle is a modified sidecar with a roof both on the passenger side and driver's seat that travels within town or city premises. The tricycle has a designated city area on where it can travel but with no specific route. It has a seating capacity of 9 or more depending on the driver.

Variations of the Tricycle
Some tricycles have unique designs according to the different regions in the Philippines
Motorela of Cagayan de Oro City
If you want to know more of this unique transportation you can refer to my previous post: My City's Common Transportation: The MOTORELA (Modified Motorized Philippine Tricycle)
Traysikol of Surigao

Fare: $ 0.40 up, depending on the succeeding kilometers.
3. Pedicab or Trisikad
The pedicab or trisikad is basically a bicycle with sidecar. Just like the tricycle it has a roof to protect the drivers and passengers. It is painted and designed with different colors. It seats 3 or more people. It has a shorter route than the tricycle, and is ideal to travel on narrow roads and streets.

Fare: A penny, or $ 0.01 up.
4. Skylab or Habal-habal

Habal-habal

A Habal-habal is just a motorcycle that accommodates more than 2 passengers. A modified habal-habal is called a Skylab. Believe it or not it's called a Skylab because they look like space satellites with solar panels on the side. The idea of a skylab is that it is just a common motorcycle with wood panels on the side. Skylabs are found in the island of Mindanao usually in the rural areas where roads are undeveloped and in the remotest areas. Some may even install roofs for the passengers to protect against the heat and rain.

Fare: $1 up.
5. Padyak (Train Trolley)
Some areas may be far or unreachable by other modes of transportation. If you happen to pass at a railroad track you might see this Padyak sa Riles or simply called Padyak. The seating capacity is usually 8 or more. Padyak means "heavy step" so to make the trolley move, the driver just steps on the lever constantly.
image sourceFare: $0.05 up.
Always ask other passengers even passersby other than the driver for the actual fare for they will charge you extra if you're a foreigner. Filipinos would be happy to help you and point you to your destination even accompany you to make sure you get there.
You can see the transportation are as unique as the people, so what are you waiting for? Again as we all say in our Cebuano/Kagay-anon dialect: Laag ta bai! (Let's travel and see places, friend!)

This makes me want to visit the Phillipines. For my one job, I drive a 15 person van. It's wild to think that some people are capable of moving half that on a motorcycle, that is so impressive.
Yeah, Filipinos do what they can to improve anything in order to augment their income. Thanks for reading! :)
