💗 5 Underlying Traits of a Romantic 💗steemCreated with Sketch.

in #valentinesday8 years ago (edited)

I used to believe romance was a fixed character trait, either you have it in you, or you don't.

After all, the most passionate people I know are romantic.

Yet, after witnessing surprising romantic gestures from people who didn't seem to have a romantic bone in their body , I realized we're all capable of being romantic.

It's a language some naturally speak, while for others, it takes some practice and patience to learn

As a writer who expresses my emotions and thoughts through the written word, romance comes naturally to me.

I don't expect my partner to be as romantic as me.

It's more about making the effort to be when it matters most.

It doesn't need to be reflected in grandiose gestures (although they are very welcome), it could be expressed through little ways your partner will appreciate it most.

Whether you're a romantic at heart, or simply practical, here's some insight into what makes a romantic:

Romantics have strong ties to their emotions.

It's no surprise that some of the popular romantics to date are artists.

Lord Byron, Shakespeare, William Blake were all talented artists who expressed their emotions through their works of art.

They were poets, painters, writers and political leaders who shaped the Romanticism movement and believed sense and emotion, not reason and order, were equally important means of understanding and experiencing the world. They favored individual imagination, nature and intuition over rationalism.

Put it simply : they were dreamers

Their emotions were the driving force behind the way they viewed the world

If you're an artist or someone whose naturally intuitive, chances are you may not struggle as much with being romantic.

Why?

Romantics are intuitive

Aside from being emotionally driven, romantics are primarily intuitive inclined and live through their imagination. They're visionaries who focus more on the future and envision idealistic scenarios in their head all the time.

You know what I'm talking about. That wedding, that big career move or that zest for travel.

Whereas "sensing types" are more practical and focus more on the present.

If you've taken the Myers Briggs test and received an "N" in your type for example : INFJ, it means you're more intuitive than sensing inclined

Romantics know how to transfer their passion into their loved ones

Passion comes from a strong emotion, otherwise known as a desire, which is a feeling.

We all have our unique passions. Whether it be our obsession with revamping our beloved 30 year old jeep, our love for video games or books, we invest our energy into what we love.

To some degree, passion is a form of romance. If you can learn how to manifest that energy into your loved one, magic will happen.

Romantics are vulnerable

It's a no brainer that romantics truly wear their hearts on their sleeves. Even if there's a chance of getting their heart broken, they'll still put themselves out there. They're emotional risk takers.

While it's easier for people who are already in tune with their emotions , for others, it's a little more difficult.

Being romantic involves vulnerability. Not being afraid to reveal your emotions and knowing how to fluently express them.

Men do have a harder time in this area because they've been conditioned for years to put up a strong front and tuck away their emotions (at least the ones not comfortable in expressing them).

If you want to be romantic, you need to put yourself out there despite the risk. One way of minimizing that risk is to speak your partner's language.

Romantics Learn to Express Love in the Way Their Partner Values it Most

As much as it pains a romantic not to express love in their usual grandiose way to a partner who're more practical, they know love is selfless. It isn't about them, it's about their partner.

Pay attention to the way your partner expresses love to you, that's your biggest clue.

Whether it be through handwritten cards, birthday surprises, intense affection, or sparing you a long commute, these are all indicators in what they value most.

Same rule applies to people who are romantics and their partners aren't.

You can be a romantic and hate the idea of getting roses for Valentine's day and prefer getting a pizza hand delivered to your work instead (true story).

Romance comes in many different languages, it's a matter of understanding the unique one your partner speaks.

This Valentine's Day, choose romance. Give love in the way they'd like to receive it

While these"romantic" traits may not come naturally to you, what does is your ability to develop some of them.

There's no looking back, once you see the positive effect it has on your partner

You might actually enjoy it so much and make it become a part of a daily habit 😉

How do you express romance to your partner?

As a writer who expresses my emotions and thoughts through the written word, romance comes naturally to me.

Nicely put. I often have the feeling that writers are natural empaths. having emotional intelligence is also one of the traits of Romantics.

If you want to be romantic, you need to put yourself out there despite the risk. One way of minimizing that risk is to speak your partner's language.

This is also an important factor. what is romantic to you can be different to another. nice article resteemed. happy valentine's day.

thanks! glad you enjoyed it :) I realized being a romantic comes with its pros/cons but being able to emphasize and understand what the other person needs is something that comes with practice lol because we're so emotional , it can be difficult to look at things objectively. A work in progress though!
Happy valentine's day to you as well :)
