Summer Roadtrips @senseicat

in #life8 years ago

I remember taking road trips as a kid and still fond of them even today. One of my favorite parts of summer is exploring new places in a car and often, the best part is not having a specific itinerary.

It is interesting to me because most of the people who dream of retirement include travel as one of the items on their bucket list. Sometimes, it is as simple as taking a few road trips, RV adventures, or exotic locations.

Travel is definitely on my to do list and I wish that I had more time and money to fulfil my dreams. I realize that an old fashioned road trip is an excellent way to cure the travel bug on a smaller budget regardless of the allotted time.

One of he best experiences is including your children into your travel plans and it is startling how many times kids will recount travel stories throughout their lifetime. It is great to get out of the mundane routine and instill a sense of adventure at a young age.

My son and I have had the fortune to take single day road trips, weekend getaways, and extended holidays together and we recount our experiences to family and friends.

My girlfriend told me that she was planning on going to Hawaii next year with her husband and she says she needed someone to watch her kids. I volunteered, but also reminded her that some of my best travel experiences are with my son and she may consider bringing those kiddos even on their anniversary trip.

What are some of your road trip memories?

I remember when we lived in Ohio and longed for an adventure out west. We started making trips to Gunnison Colorado as my husband had previously been there before we were married and was fond of it. We flew out there due to distance. Our three children went with us and had never flown before. Our youngest was but 2 and a half, and you could tell that the people were wary of how he would react to flying. He just giggled the whole time which was a relief to everyone on that plane! Once we landed in Denver, we rented a car. In 18 days we put over 3000 miles on that rental. Good thing they gave us unlimited mileage or we would have been in hock for quite a while! We went everywhere from Irwin Pass up at Crested Butte, to Lake City, some distance south of Gunnison. We all fell in love with area, and we did eventually move to our 'vacation' destination. We don't currently live there, but there are lots of fond memories of that trip. Time has passed and the children are all grown. We moved to the Pacific Northwest. Our children at home now have four legs and tails!

You absolutely rock and I am so inspired by your story. It is so interesting how there are certain memories that always stay so clear and you have established a lovely family history to share with us and future generations.

one of my most fav road trips was driving down the oregon/california coast in a 9-14 porsch... sooo beautiful with the top down most of the way... except it broke down a lot = still lots of fun! x (((😁)))

That sounds absolutely incredible! I went to the Oregon coast this past Fall with my best friend of 25 years. The Hwy. 1 drive along California coast is amazing and I am hoping to schedule it this summer.

Roadtrips are always fun and represent one of the best memories from childhood. I have memories of traveling to several places within the Andes mountains in Peru. The high altitude always affected someone...

That sounds breathtakingly beautiful and I can imagine the greenery as well as the cold winters. Yes, I am affected by extreme elevation, but the views are worth it!
