New Fish Photos! Spawning Kokanee Salmon
One of the little adventures I had this last weekend was photographing the spawning Kokanee Salmon at a somewhat nearby location but a difficult spot to access due to it being located off the beaten path. I visited the spot last weekend and there were no fish yet, but this time they did not disappoint. The Kokanee turn nice and red when spawning so they make for a great subject matter. They are usually more silver looking in lakes but when they get ready to spawn they turn color. Sadly, this also means that they will be dying soon and supposedly they don't taste good once they are red.
While there, we ran into a couple of guys who either worked for Fish and Game or a nearby fishery. They asked me not to share the exact location for fear of it becoming a popular spot for lots of tourists to visit, so I'm sorry but I can not say...
The top image was photographed using an ewa-marine underwater housing on a Canon 5DS R with a 16-35mm lens set at 19mm. The camera was set on speed priority ( Tv mode ) with a shutter speed of 1/400. The ISO was 800 and this led to an aperture of f6.3. Autofocus was on as it is hard to focus on moving fish with the underwater housing on. The bottom photo had similar settings.
I am pretty happy with both of these images but I can't decide which one I like better... What do you think? Which photo do you like better, the top one or bottom one?

Tons of fun indeed. But it's kind of a spray and pray situation. I can't really see what I'm getting so I take TONS of photos and hope I get a decent one. Glad you like that second one. I like it a lot too but the main goal of the day was to get a nice over/under shot. Still, that one turned out pretty cool. Cheers!
Both are cool but I think I would choose a top one. I would be pretty scared to put my camera underwater lol, even with waterproof casing :D
Thanks for letting me know! Yup, it was incredibly scary the first time I used the underwater housing. But I've used it a bunch of times now so it's not so bad. I do check it every time for tears, cracks, and leaks though. Cheers!

Huh tough choice the top photo I like the top half (above water) view better, the bottom photo has the better underwater shot. Maybe a little photoshop trickery to combine the above water view of the first shot to set the scene with the underwater scene of the second. If I had to pick one, I pick the second.
