Lanthanoid Material Is Superconductive Near Room Temperature
If you gently push on hydrogen and lanthanum with a force of 200 gigapascals a bizarre super hybrid gets created. And first tests show that this compound is superconductive at temperatures closer to room temperature than any material before.
One of the current main scientific goals is to create a material that is superconductive at room temperature. It’s nt easy but slowly we are getting there. And one team has recently gotten very close. While the results so far are only preliminary, if proven to be true it will be the first ever above 0°C superconductive material.
Russell Hemley from the George Washington University in Washington DC and his coworkers noticed a sudden drop in electrical ressitance at 7°C. The material they observed it in is a “superhybrid” of lanthane – LaH10 – that was synthetized in quite extreme conditions. The study will be published in the journal Physical Review Letters.
The new material was created by compressiging a small amount of hydrogen and lanthane in a diamond container using a pressure of over 200 gigapascals. This created a new structure. Previous experiments indicated that this material should be superconductive at temepratures that are (for superconductivity) high.
Superconductive materials that work at or near room temeprature are the key to completely new systems of energy transfers – without losses at long distances. This would save an incredible amount of energy for our civilization.
