The first and most important thing that would help you grow on Steemit is to have Steem Power. I suggest that you should have at least 200 SP to start with.
Don't upvote each and every post. You should onlupvote 8 or 9 posts per day, and that too, with a gap of 2 hours.
Every ~ 2 hours, your voting power recharges, so upvote only then.
Try to upvote comments too; I recommend to upvote 2 comments per day; you will earn curation rewards!
Try to comment on the posts of others. You can select your favorite category and leave your comments on the posts there. In this way, you will get to know people and they will know you, and may be, upvote your comment too.
Try to participate in the contests. Look for posts by the tag 'contests'
Try to look for Steem power delegation. If you get a SP delegation, it will increase your voting power, and you will have more influence. Before buying a delegation, do compare different asking prices of different delegators.

Approved posts in utopian-io section get an huge upvote from utopian-io bot in a few hours after these posts were approved. So this is good way to earn curation rewards :)

Really good sets of tips. Right now I have only 100SP, maybe that's the reason I'm not earning curation rewards much.
