Uniting India

India is a country with a varied culture. The people are different, the languages are different, the food is different and so is the lifestyle.

What is different?

• the people of India speak different languages and even districts of the same state have different dialects ( Bhojpuri, Bengali, Gujarati, Marathi, Oriya, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada - a lot more to be listed) Hindi is a common language and along with English, helps in communication

• the dress code is totally different ( Salwar Kameez to saree to the set mundu )

• the food varies a lot; from place to place ( from the Kashmiri to Bengali to the south cuisines contrasting the west like the Goan cuisine which is a lot influenced by Portuguese)

• the traditional livelihood is also different ( fishing in coastal areas, agriculture in the mainland and so on)

• there are different religions but almost every state has people of different faiths and there are places of worship in all. People generally live in harmony even though some with vested interests try to disrupt it

• there are different versions of Hollywood like Bollywood, Tollywood, Mollywood etc, and the movies are one big factor in influencing the mind of the Indian

What helps in uniting this country?

A lot of general factors help in uniting India. They are

• music
• movies
• food
• religious movements like the Iskcon and Sathya sai samithy

An often not thought about, factor which actually helps in uniting the country is JOB

People shift their home base to other states in search of jobs. Naturally, they adapt to the locality and the next generation is more comfortable living in the state. Three or four generations later, the people adopt it as their home state and of course helped by local identity cards linked with the address.
For example, my grandfather's grandfather hailed from Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu. Over the generations, my family has completely adapted to the state of Kerala except for the language and certain religious customs. I still speak Tamil but it would certainly sound funny to people native to Tamil Nadu.
