The empty planet - a warning (story)

in #story5 years ago

It was dark all over. There was not a ray of light. He walked past what seemed to be a plastic drum. It had nothing in it. The hunger pangs were getting terrible and the search for water and food was making him tired but he knew that if he stopped, he would collapse and die.

There was not a soul around. No animals, no birds, no greens. Nothing except a few trees which had survived the blast. His parents had always scolded him for using the mobile and stuck in the basement which was his lab but that was what saved him that day when almost all living beings on the planet had been wiped off by the nuclear blast.

He was too much in a shock for a few days and slowly recovered from the melancholy and started searching for food and water. The empty houses had a few supplies that were not destroyed but it did not last long.

He wondered if there were any young people like him who must have survived the blast because they were in the basement. He called aloud and shouted for help but nobody answered.

The next day, he wandered off for a bit and came across what had been a township earlier. He knew he would not come across corpses because there was nothing left anyway.

What had people gained by all this, he wondered. The paper money meant nothing now. It was meaningless. The fees, the bills, the fare, the rent, and the race to hoard more money. The man had forgotten to replenish and nourish the planet and in his greed for power and money had helped destroy it completely.

If only they had realized that they were not only destroying nature but also bringing upon doomsday as well.

He sighed and moved on and checked houses as he walked, for survivors. Suddenly, he jumped. He had seen a light from a window and he ran towards the house. He opened what seemed a door and went towards where the light had been seen, all the time calling out. A feeble voice answered him. He looked down and saw a girl of his age, trying to get up. He could see that she was okay but must not have eaten for a few days. He picked her up and started to cry uncontrollably. It was such a relief to have met another survivor. He gave her the water he had collected for himself and an energy bar that he had saved. She grabbed it and ate with a hunger he knew he experienced. After that, she wiped his tears. She felt better and talked to him.

Together, they went down the basement where she had been when the blast occurred and helped him bring out seeds and pots that they had kept away for later use. They hoped for the best and planted the seeds wondering how they would water it when the rain came pouring down. Looking at each other in wonder, they thanked God and ran towards the house to collect the rainwater in whatever utensils they could.

The rain continued for about two days. They decided to spend the night in the basement where it was safer. She opened a trunk and screamed in joy. Her mother must have kept the bag of rice there.

Google was not there to help instruct them on how to cook rice but they did, that day.

Another beginning and another new life...

This was just a story.

you can do your bit by planting tree saplings, promote fruit farms and refusing to add to the pollution.

Ways to reduce pollution and preserve the planet:

  • use more of the public transport system
  • plant more saplings
  • consume organic food
  • stop purchasing factory farm produce
  • buy from the local grocer than from multinational companies
  • political bigwigs? - stop supporting those who do not care for the planet
  • work for NGO's that spread the GO GREEN message and also do something about it
  • try to grow your own vegetables and why not try to form a neighborhood group and plant together or rear fish that can be used by the group itself instead of having to buy frozen ones.

Did you know that the Papaya fruit is the easiest to grow and take care of and yields soon?

I never saw this type of flower!

It is called a flower hereabouts. It is actually covering the seed inside the shell and quite beautiful besides fetches a good price because of its medicinal value.

A seemingly futuristic story which could very well come true... well told; we definitely need to take more care over our usage of resources...
