Pripyat - a ghost town/Prypeć - miasto duchów [photography]

26th of april 1986 was an ordinary day for the inhabitants of Pripyet, a small town in the northern Ukraine. Nobody suspects, that the event of the day will be remembered forever as the largest catastrophe in the history of nuclear power. As a result of incorrectly performed safety test of the reactor cooling system, there was an overheating and partial melting of the reactor core and a chemical hydrogen explosion. It cause direct emission of graphite dust and uranium from inside the reactor. As a result of a disaster immidiately died 31 people and 200 people got radiation sickness. However, the effects of the catastrophe are still felt today. The area was evacuated within a radius 30 km and created a zone of alienation. Inhabitants left the city in haste, leaving their animals, goods and memories behind.

26 kwietnia 1986 roku był dla mieszkańców Prypeci, małego miasteczka w północnej Ukrainie, zwyczajnym dniem. Nikt nie podejrzewał, że wydarzenia tego dnia będą zapamiętane jako największa katastrofa jądrowa w historii energetyki jądrowej. W efekcie nieprawidłowo przeprowadzonego testu bezpieczeństwa układu chłodzenia reaktora doszło tam do przegrzania i częściowego stopienia rdzenia reaktora oraz chemicznego wybuchu wodoru. Spowodowało to bezpośrednią emisję radioaktywnego pyłu grafitu oraz uranu do atmosfery. Na miejscu zginęło 31 osób, a ok. 200 zapadło na chorobę popromienną. Skutki katastrofy odczuwane są do dziś. Obszar w promieniu 30km został natychmiast ewakuowany, a w jego miejscu powstała zamknięta zona. Mieszkańcy opuszczali miasto w pośpiechu, nie zabierając zwierząt, swoich dóbr i zostawiając na miejscu wszystkie swoje wspomnienia.

Today, Pripyat is a destination of tourist trips. Measurements made on May 10, 2001 by radiologists from the Warsaw University of Technology showed radiation at the dose of 1 mSv per year in Chernobyl, as much as, for example, in Warsaw. Pripyat is a ghost town, where timehas stopped. Everything is the same as the moment of evacuation 31 years ago. Nature took the power over the city, animals that survived fared and live far away from the human. For some one's life is over, the other goes on...

Dzisiaj Prypeć jest celem wycieczek turystycznych. Pomiary wykonane 10 maja 2001 roku przez radiologów z Politechniki Warszawskiej wykazały w Czarnobylu promieniowanie o mocy dawki 1 mSv na rok, czyli tyle ile, na przykład, w Warszawie. Prypeć to "miasto duchów", gdzie czas się zatrzymał. Wszystko zostało takie, jak w dniu ewakuacji 31 lat temu. Natura przejeła władzę w mieście, zwierzęta, które przeżyły zdziczały i żyją z dala od ludzi. Dla jednych życie się skończyła, dla drugich dalej się toczy...

Some time ago, my dear friend was in Pripyet and brought back a lots of stories and photos. I want to share it with you, I watch them always with a bit of curiosity and sadness.

Pewien czas temu, Prypeć odwiedził mój przyjaciel. Przywiózł stamtąd pełno historii i zdjęć, którymi chcę się z Wami podzielić. Zawsze oglądam je z pewną dozą ciekawości i smutkiem.
