Life Lessons From A Comedian
Life is like a teacher but one who has an infinite number of things to teach and is a never ending source of wisdom; a fountain of wisdom, if you will. The whole process of being born, getting old and getting old some more, is a learning process.
Everything and everyone in our lives can teach something of value to us, we need only listen (and see). A true friend can teach you the value of friendship, a cartoon character can teach you the value of perseverance, a traveller can teach you the importance of experiencing new things and so on.
The point is, everywhere you look, you can find inspiration and motivation that will add something new to your life, something of value. Today, I am going to talk about what we can learn from comedians.
You may have seen them in comedy clubs or in movies, jumping around doing stupid things, but believe it or not, you can learn some of the most important life lessons from them.
1. Make Other People Laugh

The first thing that comes to mind when thinking of comedians is….you guessed it, laughter! That is what they basically do, isn’t it? Be it stand up comedians or in movies or TV shows, what comedians are trying to do is make us laugh.
There is something incredible about laughter. It is contagious. It signifies happiness and joy. The world needs a lot of it and in my opinion, all the comedians in the world are doing a great service to humanity by making us laugh, something we want to do a lot of but end up not doing enough of.
Of course, we don’t want to keep laughing 24 X 7. There aren’t enough mental institutions in the world to house 7.5 billion people! But yes, we do want life to be such that we can have many such moments of laughter and joy.
Only if we humans shifted our focus from making each other miserable to making each other laugh and have fun during our short time together here on Earth, we could all be living such a healthier and happier lives.
2. You Don’t Have To Pretend Your Life Is Perfect
One of the things I noticed about comedians is that they are so comfortable in their own skin. You know what I mean? They accept that they are not perfect and that they have flaws and when someone points out those flaws and tries to make fun of them, they don’t get angry about it or try to defend it for the sake of their ego, they simply roll with it and turn it into a joke.
In the day and age of social media, everyone pretends how awesome their life is or how perfect it is while that is not at all the case. This is especially true in the case of teenagers these days.
Also, we are often in a defensive state of being where we have built a metaphorical shell around ourselves and consider ourselves and our opinions to be perfect. Not all of us but most of us, in one way or the other. We need to accept the fact that we are all works in progress and that we will never be perfect no matter what because to be human is to have flaws.
Or else, we would all be gods, wouldn’t we? When someone calls you out on your flaws, don’t try to defend yourself, as they feed on that. Instead, accept it and try to spin it into something funny and that person will lose interest in you and look somewhere else.
3. How To Deal With Life
As I mentioned above, comedians teach us to incorporate more laughter in life but that’s not the extent of the teachings about how to go through life. There is a lot more we can learn simply by observing them. For this purpose I’m going to take an example of stand up comedians.
They are known to be spontaneous and quick on their feet. So, when they are presented with an unexpected event, they can quickly come up with ways to handle that event. They are ready at all times.
They live in the present and improvise their way as they go and even then, they manage to do what they do really well. The other thing of importance we can learn from them is to handle the unfavourable situations in life.
If you’ve seen a stand up comedian, you’ll know that they handle hecklers really well which is a really handy quality given the amount of haters in anybody’s life today. As Taylor Swift would say, haters gonna hate, hate, hate. Comedians spin the hate into comedy and often leave the haters embarrassed. So be like them and ‘shake it off’.
