5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: Toothache

Brenton stared at the two agents who stood on the other side of his desk. Erin was one of the newer recruits, having joined the company nearly one year ago. Jarred was a mid-level agent who, despite his talent, was being held back due to his abrasive personality. The agents had only recently been partnered for an assignment.

“I’ve received word that the two of you were involved in an...altercation?”

The details of the encounter were left out, but it was clear that there had been a problem. For one, Jarred was sporting a swollen lip and seemed to be favoring his jaw.

“No altercation, sir,” said Erin flatly, not quite hiding her anger.

Brenton raised his eyebrows and looked to Jarred. The man shifted uncomfortablely under his gaze.

“No problems, sir,” he said. “Just a misunderstanding.”

“Details,” said Brenton, pulling out a form to be filled out and placed into their files.

“All I said was that she has a sweet pair of--”

“He made an inappropriate comment regarding my--”

“I get it,” Brenton interrupted, making the appropriate notes on the form. “Erin, what would you like me to record as your defense?”

“I was helping him with this toothache,” she ground out.
