5 Minute Freewrite - Prompt: California

The sheriff was clearly unhappy with her response and it showed. Alexandra did her best not to wilt under his hard glare. She kept a pleasant smile in place and maintained eye contact, waiting for him to speak.

"A yard sale." he repeated.

"Yes, I'm having a yard sale," she confirmed cheerfully.

"Ms. Grey, perhaps things work a bit differently in New California, but --"

"Oh, California isn't much different," she interrupted. A customer was hovering nearby, clearly hesitating with his purchase due to the sheriff's presence. "I've carefully read the local laws and yard sales are permitted."

"Yes, but the understanding is that unwanted household goods would be sold. These are clearly not household goods."

"Well, they are in my home. And since my permits have been denied, they would just be cluttering up the house and getting in the way. That's why I've decided to have a yard sale and clear them out."

Mr. Clayton pinched the bridge of his nose and let out a tired sigh as Alexandra smiled confidently at him. When he looked back at her, he appeared much more irritated than intimidating.

"My point is that the council doesn't want you selling these things. Magic caused the Collapse, complicated efforts to rebuild, and caused chaos during recovery efforts. This town has worked hard to become what it is, so it doesn't need the disorder and destruction that magic brings."
