The Migraine Blessing, Part 2: Natural, Effective, Fast Solutions

in #health5 years ago

If ever you are struck by a migraine, I'd bet my bottom bitcoin that you want it to end as quickly as possible!

I know I feel that way. The great news is that it's totally doable to stop one in its tracks, and better yet to prevent them altogether! I'll share easy, natural, effective, gentle, safe, inexpensive/free treatments in this post. Read on!

In my last post on migraines, I shared the 4 stages (prodrome, aura, attack, and postdrome) and their symptoms , which can include:

  • Insomnia
  • Fatigue
  • Light, noise, and smell sensitivity
  • Trouble with understanding or expressing spoken or written language
  • Vision changes such as bright spots, blind spots, flashes of light, or geometric patterns
  • Hallucinations
  • Nausea and vomitting
  • Muscle stiffness and body aches
  • The headache from hell

Symptoms vary from person to person and from episode to episode. For example, during my first migraine I didn't have a headache at all, and I actually thought it was a stroke given the sudden onset of numbness, blind spots, and the inability to speak. I have since come to know firsthand the extreme discomfort of a migraine headache.

By all accounts, migraines are terribly unpleasant - so WTF is the blessing in that??

There was a time that I thought the human being and recovery itself was pretty limited, but now I am thankful to know from experience that healing is infinite. For anyone who has experienced pain, relief itself is a miracle!

Migraines can also be a reminder to prioritize and invest in your wellness and build healthy habits into your daily routine. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure! Plus, EVERYTHING is better when you are healthy and happy, so migraine management through healthy lifestyle changes can legitimately make ALL facets of life better.

Further, I believe all ailments are caused by imbalances in our energetic fields and only manifest in the body when we've ignored them for too long in the subtler realms. Exploring the emotional, mental, and spiritual causes behind dis-ease is where true solutions lie for me. Increased self awareness, conscious upgrades, and using your mind to build the invincible, most awesome life of your dreams is pretty much the height of existence, imho. And what better blessing exists than to live the height of existence??

For that reason, ultimate answers for me lie in the energetic cause of migraines:

Migraines, according to medical intuitive Louise Hay, represent "Dislike of being driven. Resisting the flow of life. Sexual fears, or fear of being close, letting someone in too close. Migraine headaches are created by people who want to be perfect and who create a lot of pressure on themselves. A lot of suppressed anger is involved..."

Lastly, migraines can be a blessing if you allow yourself to receive love and support from competent friends, family, or genuine healthcare providers! My last 2 migraine attacks were supremely unpleasant, however I did appreciate the tender love and care I received from 2 considerate nurses @everlove and @qiqi-power, as well as the seemingly endless guidance and support of master of health @quinneaker. In fact, the real shift from pain to healing only happened when I asked for and was willing to receive help.

Without further ado, here are the natural treatments I recommend for great success in stopping migraines:

1. Cannabis

This is the most valuable plant on Earth. It has supreme medicinal properties, and has been extensively studied and documented to prevent or stop many if not all of the above symptoms of migraine. If a migraine hits, it can be made better or worse based on your mental posture - appreciating the opportunity for healing may not make the pain go away, but does make the situation more bearable. On the other hand, panicking adds unnecessary stress hormones to the mix that exacerbate the problem. On top of alleviating physical symptoms, smoking cannabis, eating an edible, or taking CBD oil can relieve the stress and calm the mind.

2. Essential Oils

Lavender, peppermint, rosemary, and eucalyptus essential oils are staples in any natural medicine chest. Lavender promotes calm and relaxation, which again can completely shift your mental posture and alleviate suffering. Peppermint is respected for soothing headaches and nausea. Rosemary is also great for headaches as well as improving blood circulation. Eucalyptus reduces inflammation and can clear the sinuses - I tend to get a lot of sinus pressure with a migraine, and inhaling eucalyptus oil feels great. These oils can be diffused and inhaled, and lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus can be applied directly to the skin or scalp. Rosemary is very strong and should be diluted with a carrier oil (like coconut, almond, or olive oil) before applying to the body so it doesn't irritate the skin.

3. Alternate Hot and Cold Foot Baths

@everlove blessed me with relief in less than 15 minutes with this super cool and quite enjoyable treatment for migraines! Heat clean water to as hot as you can stand, and pour in a bowl or tub. Soak your feet in the hot water for 5-10 minutes (you can add cold water if it is too hot, or more hot water if it gets too cold). Switch to a bowl or tub of cold water for 5-10 minutes. Go back and forth to hot bath and cold bath 3-4 times. You can also add essential oils or epsom salts to the foot baths. IDK for sure why this works, but my guess is that #1 it helps draw toxins out through the feet, and #2 the surprising temperature difference stimulates your brain enough to trip the circuits that are going haywire and causing migraine.

4. Hot Tea

Mint, lavender, and chamomile are very soothing and hydrating teas, and ginger is a great anti-inflammatory. Dehydration can play a significant role in migraines, so drinking water and/or tea is a must. The added antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of herbal tea is beneficial in a migraine attack. Cupping your hands around a hot cup feels really great and relaxing, which again can improve your mental posture. Lavender and chamomile are well known stress and anxiety reducers as well.

^^^This was enough for me to find drastic relief in under 20 minutes during a migraine that hit a month ago. However because I didn't take good care of and heed the warning signs of my body, I got another migraine a few days ago that dragged on much longer. Here is what we added to get rid of a more difficult episode:

5. Coffee

I love coffee and drink it almost every day, so I was quite stoked to learn that it could potentially stop a migraine! I had a hot cup of coffee with some coconut milk to combat inflammation, and the pain started to lift by the time I finished my drink. Some say this is more effective if you aren't a daily coffee drinker, but I found it to be quite effective and fast.

6. Butterbur

I took a butterbur pill about halfway through my coffee, so hard to pinpoint if it was one or the other or the combination that was most effective. I highly recommend giving butterbur a shot! This is a plant from the daisy family. You can get butterbur capsules in the supplement section of health food stores.

7. Anti-Inflammatories

Studies show that blood vessels are irritated and inflamed during migraines, so supporting the body with anti-inflammatories is a smart move. Turmeric, ginger, coconut oil, lavender, pineapple, berries, and olive oil are great natural anti-inflammatories.

8. Rest

OMG if you can sleep, SLEEP!!! My body feels like I just got in a fight during and after a migraine, and rest is the time to rebuild and recover. Sleeping is difficult for me when the pain is so intense, but at least laying down in the dark and being quiet feels good.

Nurse @qiqi-power took special delight in treating me as her patient and supporting good rest for me during my last migraine. She made me a cozy bed by the fire, made sure I had plenty of water, then played songs for me on the kazoo. Who cares about pain with such love???

These are effective treatments from my experience with migraines, and it's extremely helpful to know your options when you need immediate relief! Prevention, however, is even more valuable.

In my next post in this series, I will share tips for preventing migraines altogether and eliminating them from your life!
