iPhone XR vs. iPhone 8+ Camera

I have an iPhone 8+, and I love it. There are plenty of awesome features of iPhones that make amazing pieces of technology, but here I'm going to talk only about the camera.

The camera is awesome, which is super important given how many pictures I take on a daily basis. I love the resolution, sharpness, and especially the portrait feature of the camera, as well as the convenience of editing right from the device. And it's so simple to upload photos from the phone to almost any platform! Plus, sharing with friends is fast AF using the airdrop feature.

@quinneaker just got an iPhone XR, which has many of the capabilities my phone has and then some. We did a quick little camera comparison:

These are unedited photos of the same scene, and IMO the XR is superior. You get a greater range of colors and brighter light. I could look up the tech specs of dpi and resolution and other nerdy notables etc, but it doesn't really matter when you can straight up compare by the power of sight.




So then we compared portrait features on one of our favorite subjects around here:

These are both edited similarly. One thing I like about the XR over the 8+ is that you can take portrait mode photos from much closer - I find I often have to adjust my physical position when switching from regular to portrait mode when doing photoshoots. Not that big a deal, but when you take hundreds or thousands of pics a day, these tiny adjustments start to add up.


However I do find the 8+ superior in how many lighting option edits are available in portrait mode, which don't even exist on the XR. This is surprising, given that I expected the newer (XR) model to have everything and more that the 8+ can do.



Stage light & stage light mono options are available on the 8+ but not the XR.

All in all I think my 8+ camera is great and I've loved it deeply, but seeing it compared to the XR shows me how much better it could be. Ah, sweet sweet contrast!
