Insults from a doctor & the truth about asthma
Unlike most people, when I hear a diagnosis from a doctor I politely turn down their offer of drugs and go home to find out what is the cause and how to correct the imbalance. On this occasion it was for my two year old son Esteban who has been coughing for the last six months on and off. Mostly in the mornings and after exercise. Three doctors examined him in Bali and told Sabrina & I without question it was not asthma. But couldn’t say what it was.
Here in France we thought we would get another opinion and it took the doctor just a few seconds listening to Esteban’s chest to make his diagnosis. He felt certain it was asthma and that the doctors in Bali were mistaken. According to him there is no cure for asthma and Esteban would most likely need a Ventolin inhaler for the rest of his life.
Genetics
We quizzed him on what the cause might be and after establishing Sabrina also suffered from asthma when she was a child he concluded that it must be genetic.
Suggesting that Esteban was doomed from birth does not resonate with me at all, for it is my belief that assuming a child is not born with a disease, any imbalance they experience in their body begins as something external.
Could it be that eating habits passed on from parent to child over the course of many generations give the appearance of genetics?
Something for you to consider the next time a doctor slaps the genetic label on your situation.
The conversation turns ugly
The doctor had already started writing a prescription for the inhaler when we followed his diagnosis with a simple question, ‘is there a natural alternative?’
I felt as if he was laughing at us when he responded with a simple no.
We politely explained that we wouldn’t be taking an inhaler until we had done further research. He seemed aggravated by this and somehow the conversation moved on to vaccines. His aggravation turned to anger when we explained that our children were unvaccinated. He gave us his modern medicine speech and ended by calling us ignorant & uncultured. We figured it was time to leave at this point.
I managed to take this photo just as we were leaving his surgery.
A lovely sales cabinet of different inhalers for all those who don’t choose to go home and do the research.
I am able to smile at doctors like this in the knowledge that it is not their fault. The have been educated by a system which feeds off profit and does not account for the simplest permanent cure of all: diet & nutrition.
A close/up on asthma
It is estimated that over 300 million people suffer from asthma and this number is increasing rapidly. According to the World Health Organization asthma is responsible for more than 180,000 deaths worldwide each year and it is the most common chronic illness among the world’s children.
Conventional medications for treating asthma include anti-inflammatory drugs, steroids, “anti lgE” drugs and inhalers (bronchodilators).
While these drugs may help quickly open up the airways, they do not come without risk.
Conventional drugs used for treating asthma, particularly steroids can impair immune function and lead to more serious health problems… studies show that steroids cause permanent, debilitating effects after a single dosage. Dr. John Mills, chief of infectious diseases at San Francisco General
What is the risk free solution?
It took me no more than a few seconds to find hundreds of people online claiming to have permanently healed their asthma through nothing more than a improvement in their diet.
My more devious side wants now to send an email to our new doctor friend with some links to further his education. I shall resist however for this man most likely believes the internet is full of lies and would consequently dismiss the idea without further consideration. Personally I cannot imagine why hundreds of people would feel moved to lie about this on the internet when they have nothing to gain from it. We all know what the drug companies stand to gain by keeping us reliant on them.
Foods which cause asthma
The following list includes some of the culprits:
- trans fats or refined oils
- conventional dairy
- added sugar
- gluten
- processed carbohydrates
- preservatives
The lack of nutrients in certain ‘foods’ stresses the body, making it less able to neutralise toxins and more susceptible to asthma.
Foods which cure or prevent asthma
The following list includes some of the foods which will help:
Brightly coloured carotenoid foods such as tomatoes, carrots and leafy greens
Foods with folate (vitamin B9) such as green leafy vegetables, beans and nuts. Folate helps to reduce allergic reactions and inflammation
Foods with magnesium such as greens, beans, nuts, cocoa: magnesium can induce bronchial smooth muscle relaxation and allow air to get into and out of the lungs more easily
Garlic, onions and mustard seeds
Broccoli, broccoli sprouts, Brussels sprouts and other cruciferous vegetables
Foods with vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid)
High-fiber foods
Sugar & bread
Since discovering sugar & bread Esteban has been able to think of little else when imagining food. His first word of the day is currently ‘Cake!’
Sabrina & I have most likely aggravated the problem by restricting these items initially, leading him to desire them even more and we realise now there has been a direct correlation between his declining nutrition and increase in coughing.
Radical Unschooling
We are in the process of installing a radical unschooling methodology into his life, meaning that not only will he have complete freedom around what he wants to learn, but also around food choices, screen time & bed time. If you are interested to learn why we are doing this please check my article HERE
With insufficient nutrition Esteban is suffering now but it is our hope that when he realises & embraces his complete freedom again he will go back to using his intuition around food. Oddly enough just yesterday after three days of eating bread, chips & cakes we put a plate of raw vegetables in front of him to see what would happen… and he ate the lot. For the first time in months.
Moral of the story
If we stop messing with the energy of our children’s experience by implementing our rules around food and simply trust that they are much more in tune with their body than we are, it is my belief they are more likely as a consequence to have a healthy experience of this world.

Well done! I had severe asthma earlier in my life. Found out it was easily curable and have been completely asthma free for over 10 years.
It is cruel for doctors not to listen and learn from patients that cure their own illnesses.
Are these 'doctors' trying to make people healthy or sick? They make money from sickness not health.
Cured patient = lost customer .

haha! Spot on
Fantastic to hear this! Thank you so much for sharing your amazing transformation here :)
Like I said, it's not the fault of the doctor but the system which educates them. I believe most doctors do genuinely want to help people but are not correctly equipped to do so.
We gave up allopathic medicine years ago, but I wish it had been sooner. My 2nd child has an extensive list of food allergies, sensitivities and intolerances. You can read about it here if you're interested.
We're working with a nutritionist and a naturopath to heal her inflamed gut and help her absorb the healthy fats she so badly needs.
We homeschool eclectically, but I find it interesting the idea of letting a toddler make their own food choices. It makes sense that we each know what our bodies need, but in my daughter's case, too much sugar or not enough fats, and she's an emotional mess, tantrums and then striking her siblings.
Then consequently, I restrict how the other 3 children eat because seeing others eat what she can't have is very hard on her.
On one hand, it's made the entire family healthier, because we would probably still be eating organic, but not as clean if it weren't for her condition.
Anyway, always nice to meet a non-vaxxer. I have 1 fully Vaxxed, 1 partially and 2 not at all. The 2 that aren't vaxxed are always the quickest to get through any passing colds or viruses, if they get sick at all. I think our family would make for an interesting study because it's not the fully Vaxxed kid that has the issues, but the partially.
Anyway, great post. Thank you.
Amazing to learn your story. Thank you for sharing it.
If only more people were able to take conscious action as you have done. Very inspirational. And very interesting to hear that the health issues have been for your partially vaxxed child.
Our two have so far been in perfect health except for this cough and some skin irritations which were more than likely to do with the humidity of Bali. And we lived in a very open minded community full of perfect health unvaxxed kids ;)
This is a simply AWESOME post, Sam!! So often the "asthma" is unexpressed sadness in a child, and a signal they need more home time and being settled. Greatly admire, support and agree. My own experience says that the endocrine disrupting chemicals in our bathrooms and laundries also play a HUGE role in childhood asthma and restricting healthy immune development. Adding daily live probiotic foods that he ENJOYS and CHOOSES works wonders - coconut water kefir has been a godsend for us!! Wonderful parenting, great to see such awareness shared for the greater good.
Interesting to hear how it can be unexpressed sadness. Can't think why Esteban would be sad? Perhaps because he is not the centre of attention any more with a little sister now? He certainly seems to spend a lot of time fussing about her not touching his stuff!
Thanks for the probiotic tip. Coconuts are not so easy to get our hands on here in France as they were in Bali but where there is a will there is a way ;)
FYI, there's a typo. should be Ventolin instead of Ventalin.
I know because I carry one on standby.
Ah! Thanks for that. Not a word I was very familiar with until a few days ago.
Sounds like you have some experience with this. Have you found diet to be an influence?
Sometimes, it does for me. The thing is different people have different triggers and for myself sometimes the same trigger does not trigger which I have no idea why. Some are affected by cold drinks, I'm not. Dust affect me quite a bit but not all the time. Nuts is the food that sometimes trigger my attack but it's also not all the times. So, I have to make sure I carry the inhaler. There have been years without attack and when it came back, it last for quite a bit. Sometimes the cold weather also trigger. So, there's nothing I can really avoid eating to prevent it other that I don't drink alcohol after it triggers a couple of times and I didn't like beer anyway. :-)
lol! "politely turn down their offer" 😂👍👍
lots of good info here! great post
Just a shame the doctor was not able to be quite so polite with us ;)
Mostly doctors are always mistaken when running these tests. Its good you went to several doctors before coming up with a conclusion.
We went to a total of four doctors in the end, and it didn't feel like any of them really had an answer for us. In the end the solution is always the same... better diet.
I struggle with asthma for already 4 years and just can't simply accept doctor's "you need to take tho till the end of your life" talk.
Thank you for this post.
Sorry to hear you have been suffering with this for so long. I would be interested to hear if you are able to change your condition by changing your diet...
Keep in touch ;)
