Upgrading Yourself To Meet The Trend

In this part of the world, there is a popular business structure, typically among the Igbos, that works as a master-apprentice system where an apprentice will serve his master for a stipulated period of time, after which he will be settled and he will start his own business. During the period of his apprenticeship, he will learn the nitty-gritty of the business so that it will be easy for him to start his own. I have heard about many of these apprentices doing far better than their former masters when they start their own. The simple reason is that they have upgraded their games while their masters did not.

In this world and in this era, everything is moving so fast and the trend is quickly changing so much that the old methods of doing things may not be sufficient to deal with the challenges of the present time. It is worthy to note that knowledge, oftentimes, is limited to a particular time. When the time has passed and the person does not upgrade the knowledge, it will become obsolete. The knowledge that you celebrated yesterday, a time may come when it will begin to lose its validity. As much as it is your duty to acquire knowledge, you should also know when to upgrade the knowledge.

I kept giving people this analogy: a few decades back, office works were basically done with the manual typewriter. If someone gained extensive knowledge of the typewriter, the person will be very relevant during that time. However, in this present time, typewriter has been replaced with super complex computers and other electronic gadgets. Imagine if the person does not upgrade from his knowledge of typewriter to computer, he will lose relevance in this present time.

You have to know that the world will not wait for you to make changes to yourself, your are the one that needs to make changes and upgrade yourself to fit the demands of the world. It is by upgrading yourself that you can add value, and the value you add is directly related to your relevance. If you stop upgrading yourself, you start to lose relevance. One way the upgrade can come is in form of continuous learning. If the only knowledge you have is the one you acquired years back, then your relevance is at stake.

There is a reason why when you buy gadgets or electronics, there is usually a user manual enclosed with it. This is so that you can acquire knowledge about the gadget, so as to maximise the usage of it. When you get an entirely different gadget, it will also come with its own manual, because the manual you used for the former one may not be applicable to the new one. In the same way, as much as the world is dynamic, your knowledge should also be dynamic.

Building yourself is your exclusive prerogative and you have to take up the responsibility to do it. You have to build up today to be able to function effectively tomorrow, not waiting till tomorrow to come before you build up yourself. Always remember that to have an edge in this world that is full of competition, you need to be able to add extra value and stay relevant.
