There are more than 400 types of wild bee here in Costa Rica. Pictured below is a nest of the Trigona fulviventris. These are stingless bees. I was able to get within a few inches of the nest to take my photos.
                
This nest is on the trunk of a Mano de Tigre tree. It is said that one can pierce the side of the nest near the bottom and honey will drip out. This may well be the case but knowing the time and work that goes into producing honey I had no desire to rob such marvels of nature of their precious food.

In a single journey from collecting nectar a bee carries the equivalent of only around 0.02g of honey because nectar is approximately 40% sugar, whereas honey is about 80% sugar. Pollen is also collected by certain bees. Pollen grains come from the male part of a flower and produce male gametes or sperm cells. The bees mix the pollen with nectar to make a type of bread that is fed to the baby bees.
