Amateur radio is an exciting hobby for people who want to understand the how and why of radio communications, to practice on frequencies reserved for them, to establish contacts with other radio amateurs. So, a radio amateur practices the radio amateur.

In Canada, anyone with a certificate of competence in amateur radio has the right to own a station. It allows the exploitation of three types of stations:

  • Fixed Station: Fixed location, address indicated on the certificate.
  • Portable station: Specific location other than that indicated on the certificate.
  • Mobile Station: Unspecified location, in motion.

A radio station is assigned a call sign consisting of 4 to 6 characters. The prefix of this call sign identifies the country where the station is located. In Quebec, all call signs assigned to amateur radio stations start with VE2 or VA2.

A radio amateur is a person who likes radio communication, or we should say radio, which already fascinated Marconi, Branly and all these pioneers, professional or amateur physicists of the 1890s-1900s. It is this state of mind that still drives the hundreds of thousands of DIY enthusiasts or shortwave communicators who build their devices or antennas and then seek to verify their performance by establishing contacts with other radio amateurs everywhere. the world.
