Catapult Semi-Open Air Museum

Coming to Alanya, you must visit the museum of the Catapult.

It is located in the Tophane Mahallesi area where you will find the Shipyard semi open air museum.

This is a fascinating museum of a shipyard that we see today was built by the Seljukians in the 13th Century.

But the shipyard actually dates back to the 3rd century BC.

This was the main naval base for the Seljuk navy and today you see the only remaining preserved Seljuk Shipyard.

As a result of this shipyard built in the 14th century, Alanya became an important port for trading with Egypt, Syria and Cyprus located along the coast of Mediterranean sea.

The entire museum has all the descriptions for you to follow the history of Alanya.

You can spend an afternoon visiting this museum.

Enjoy,
Rosa

That must have been such a lovely time spent! Things made years ago hold a magic and ancient knowledge. I love seeing these kind of things.

Yes and Turkey has long history, so it is a magical land.

That's something I should look into. It's not a place I know much of, thanks for the idea ;)

That is very cool. As a woodworker I love to see how wood was used for construction long ago. Unlike cell phones that are obsolete in 5 or 6 years, wood really hasn't changed all that much, so while modern machines for working wood may be powered by electric, many of the basic techniques remain the same.

I love museums and I easily get drowned away with all the artifacts. It is good that they had it well preserved for the next generation to enjoy. It must have been a sight to see these boats out on the sea. In our city it used to be a port for Spanish galleons during the Spanish occupation. Too bad there were none left.
