# 602 - 1976 Olympic Coins - Part 21

in #steemleo4 years ago (edited)

In 1976 Montreal, Quebec, hosted the XXI Summer Olympiad.

To commemorate and help finance Canada's first Olympics, the federal government agreed to produce a series of 28 silver and 2 gold coins.

There are seven series of silver coins. Each series has two $5 CAD and two $10 CAD, making a total of 14 coins of each denomination. Each series depicts different Olympic themes on the reverse and has a common design (except for the date) on the obverse.

The Olympic coins were offered to the collectors in two finishes, Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof.

I wrote a few articles about the proof coins that I have and now I will show the Brilliant Uncirculated series that I have.

All the coins have a 92,5% silver purity (7,5% copper) and the $5 CAD weights 24.3g and the $10 CAD weights 48.6g.

The series I has the theme "Geographic".

The twenty-first coin is a $10 CAD designed by Georges Huel, who worked by invitation, and its name is "Map of the World".

It shows a simplified design of the Wold Map, with Canada in highlight.
Its issue price was $12.00 CAD.

The obverse shows the effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, designed by Arnold Machin.

I like this coin!!! I have note seen a coin with the world map on it. I do have a silver international trade unit round with the world in it, but not a traditional map. I like that coin!

You won't believe what is happening to your comments. As I am posting and using SteemLeo to comment, your comments simply do not appear to me. I had to come to steemit so I could read it.
Maybe they do not show posts sent by Partiko... Very strange...

Is that 1974 Canada World Map 10 dollar coin? If yes, then you are very lucky to own this rare mule coin. Most of the World Map 10 dollar were minted in 1973, but a few were mislabeled as 1974.

Unfortunately this is not a mule. Its date is 1976. As you said, the mules were dated 1974 and, according to numista, there are 320 mules.
Thanks for the visit and for the comment.

The usual version for the World Map coin is written 1973 on the obverse (coin side with Queen Elizebeth II), instead of 1974. 1976 is always written on the reverse (coin side with World Map) indicating the year of the Olympic event.

Thank you! So I have a mule. Do you have an idea how much does it worth?

I believe you can find the price guide easily online. Price for the coin alone is around 200-300 CAD although can go higher.

Thank you. It was just curiosity. I don't sell anything from my collection because it will be a gift to my grandchildren.
