Silver replicas. First a scam, now a bargain.
So every now and then, when the price is OK, I buy at catawiki some of these Silver coins, which are replica’s from historic Dutch Guilders from the past.
These coins have a history though!
These coins were minted more than a decade ago by a company called “Muntpost” and/or “Het Nederlandsche Muntenhuis”. This company had absolutely nothing to do with the Royal Dutch Mint, where the official Dutch coins are minted.
The coins represent the history of the Dutch Guilders and they look nice.
Back in those days these companies were regularly in the news because of their aggressive and scamfull marketing actions.
They sold these coins around 12-15 years ago Silver for absolute ridiculous prices of around EUR 50 a piece. These coins have a weight of 1 ounce and contain 925 of pure silver.
All the coins are replica’s of historical Dutch coins.
To my knowledge these companies have become bankrupt now and do not longer exist.
The last three coins I bought did have the original certificate. And in handwriting, the former owner had written down the amount he paid for them.
The price at Catawiki for which I bought them was EUR 57, including costs and shipping for the 3 of them.
If I look at the certificates they were originally sold for more than EUR 148. So indeed it was a scam, where innocent people believed they bought something very exclusive, valuable and special! Now they sell for little more than the silver price.
As I said, I buy these coins because they look nice, give an insight in the history of our money and are relatively cheap. I feel sorry for the people who actually bought them initially. They paid way to much!
But beware if you also want to buy these coins! There are also coins circulating which are not made out of silver, but are silver plated. These coins were also minted by the companies as mentioned above. I know, because I accidentally bought 2 of them because I was not aware of these silver plated versions. Also the auctioneers at Catawiki are not always aware of this!
You can recognize the silver coins by a “925” privy stamp or a tiny sword which is the silver mark used in The Netherlands. So look at the coins carefully before you buy!
Enjoy!
Silver replicas are ok but I detest scammers who sell plated coins as silver.
Really grinds my gears 😡😠😠😠😠😠😠
