Hello Steemians Do You Think You're Good Looking ??

I love Psychology and Human Behavior... And this is a question that most shy away from.

How We See Our Own Physical Appearance...

Okay , first of all let me preface this article ( and the remaining paragraphs) and say what I'm about to talk about has NO scientific backing or any formal research (that I've done myself). This is just my own observations , opinions, and ponderings. Some might agree and some may not. So take it with a grain of salt.

But I think sometimes we view our own selves and the way we physically look on the outside differently from how others view us . For instance take myself... when I think of how I look I do not really have a three dimensional idea imprinted on my Mind of what I look like. I really don't. At least not the way I look at and visualize everyone around me . Basically, I just look front face in the mirror everyday when I shave and brush my teeth. I have seen myself in different angles in Videos but not a whole lot. At least not enough to get a picture of say how I see my wife and kids and everyone else I come into contact in this World.

Have you ever thought about that ?? Maybe I am odd. Maybe the rest of you do know Exactly how the World views your physical appearance in an all around ( all angle) manner. I just cannot picture how I look. I know, weird right ??

So Do You think You're Good Looking ??

Personally, I have been told I was very attractive. But what's weird I can look in the mirror some days and say to myself "wow I look really fantastic". And then other days I can look at myself and think "wow I look totally odd and busted looking" LOL

Source above Right

As for other people ? Well, when I have been in social settings like High School and College I always saw an interesting array of personalities and "self opinions" played out openly in these Settings. I recall my college days where I would see certain people who were in Fraternities/Sororities who were really arrogant and cocky and thought they were God's gift to the opposite sex.
Some of them did have that Appearance that most people would consider attractive and nice looking. But every now and then ( okay Rob, don't get shallow on us now lol) you would see these ' better than thou' students go around like they were all that, but in essence they were just plain..well plain Janes/Jims !!

So I think how we look or better yet how we view the way we look to the outside World varies from person to person. Gosh knows I have had my share of seeing the most cutest girls who do not even know they're cute. Weird, right ?

The Video Below is a Social Experiment Addressing this

Yeah it's a little silly. But you know I think most people in this video are kind of like me. Sort of the attitude of "it is what it is" . I mean there was some attractive people who just weren't sure if they consider themselves good looking or not. Some just honestly seemed like they didn't know. While others were just embarrassed altogether by the question.

Conclusion

Getting into full fledged middle age now , I can honestly say this stuff really becomes less and less important. I mean it's all fleeting..looks and life itself. It's just part of the reality of getting older. What will ALWAYS matter up until the day we take that last breath is how we treated people around us and the compassion and empathy we have demonstrated throughout our lives. That's called securing a Legacy and it's pretty much the only thing that we can be pass down from generation to generation. In the end, it's probably all that really matters.

Cheers,
Robert

It is so interesting observing how people view themselves for sure it’s something I often think about when people watching

I myself are kind of middle of the road consider myself average and never really gave it too much thought to be honest now in late 50s I give it less thought I am just me scars and all

My wife is very hard on herself I think she is so beautiful and aging very well she seems me through rose colored glasses but sees herself in the worst of light

But I digress it’s funny how people can have such diverse ways in which they view themselves some I would consider drop dead beautiful are hard On Themselves and others so vain

Tip!

Yep, I have seen this myself quite often. Some of the prettiest think that they are not attractive. I said this in a Comment here earlier that some of it could be 'Body Dysmorphic Disorder" where above average looking people thinking they are hideous and have a flaw that no one else sees but them.

You could well be right
It’s such a shame and the ones I know I am always trying to build them up

Wow @tattoodjay. Thanks didn't even knew that that existed or what it exactly it entails , but it does sound good. EDIT : Oh okay I looked at my wallet and saw where you sent that. That's mighty nice ..thanks again

I liked this article @robertandrew and it came at a good time for me personally. I especially loved this conclusion:

The field in which I work is tied to image and, when I'm not careful, I get caught up in this thinking and Comparing and not feeling good enough. Thank you for this reminder.

No problem @coachjj . Glad you found it helpful :)

I don't know if it's self training on my part or just one of my weird attitudes. I don't take too much interests on my personal looks. I wake up everyday, take my bath and run along without checking myself on the mirror. I hardly apply body cream, comb my hair (nah, no need of that. I barb low cut weekly, saves me a lot of time, haha) but I do apply Great life or Maliza deodorants.
What do you think, does look has anything to do with 'scent'?

@emjoe not a thing wrong with that. Actually I applaud you for that. If more people focused less on appearance and more like you do,,,well we would have a much better World, imho

Thanks. I guess having a mix of different attitude spice up the world. The world may be boring if everyone behaves weirdly like me. Haha

I always find looking at myself weird, and usually I think I photograph really poorly, even though I think I'm generally considered attractive. I think learning to be secure and comfortable with yourself though is the most important thing. Just don't go too far and being one of those overconfident jerks ;).

You know @cygon I think you and about 99% of the entire population think this way. I have read even high fashion runaway models think this way. I know there is some science behind it. Maybe partially 'body dysmorphic disorder'...which is when people who are generally above average looking but see something like an extremely small flaw bigger than it really is. And everyone around them does NOT see it at all.

It is amazing how each person views themselves. I think confidence in your looks has a lot to do with your upbringing and the believe in yourself your parents instilled. Then you go to school and kids can be cruel and pick out things about you that you never noticed. A friend had ears that stuck out and had them surgically pinned back as a youngster. Now her kids have the same ears and they don’t want anything done about them. Actually they told me it was unique and they liked being different. That’s a good attitude.

Yes, @redheadpei so glad your friend's kids feel that way. There is so much pressure on kids looking this way and that way. Especially for our girls. JUst sad that we cannot make sure that the "inside" is really the only thing that should matter. We need to tell our kids this constantly.

I'm not just good looking, I'm breath taking. 😁
