Bad video game box art, vol. 3

Gaming history is full of horribly-designed video game boxes and covers. This series shines a light on some of these horrible pieces of artwork that likely prevented sales rather than encouraged them.

Street Sports Baseball

Fart-face and tank top tucked into your jeans. Not much else to say about this one.

Ninja Scooter Simulator

I'm still flummoxed that this is a thing.

Rival Turf

Did they pick the least threatening kids out of band practice to pose for this cover art?

Blood N Guts

Also known as "Study Hall Artwork, the game".

Street Warrior

Looks like the cover artists got a little aggressive with the Poser models for this cover.

I've often wondered through the years if cringe-worthy box art was ever used as an actual tactic by marketing types.

"If we make this look ridiculous, sure, people might laugh, but they'll pick up the box, and getting them to pick up the box is the first step towards making a sale..."

It's the only logical explanation I've been able to come up with thusfar that doesn't involve gross incompetence. :)

Keep in mind we didn't have the technology we have available today back then. I'm sure at their times they was just enough to awe the crowd into making a purchase. I'm still amazed at gameplay graphics and how they progress so great. Thanks for the trip down memory lane

Very true, though there was some truly amazing box art that did come out in that era. I love the original artwork that appeared on most of the games Atari published. For example:

But technology and our expectations were far lower 30+ years ago.

some not only got bad art bit some horrid names like ninja scooter simulator, hope that person was fired

Like saxophones, ninjas found their way into everything in the 80's. There's also Ninja Golf on the Atari 7800.
