SNES Classic Review - Rerez

in #gaming7 years ago (edited)

I missed out on the NES Classic because I just couldn't find one. I wasn't able to preorder one and when I went to the stores they were always sold out. Unfortunately that was something that kind of marred the NES Classic, the fact that a lot of fans were unable to play it even if they wanted to. With the SNES Classic we've had a better chance. I got one and I know a lot of other people out there got one as well. But I wanted to talk about my experiences with it and why I think it's one of the best things Nintendo has ever released.

The original Super Nintendo was a fantastic system and has entered into legendary status being one of the premier consoles that most of us have pretty fond memories of. But it's getting pretty old and the older a system gets the more problems you're gonna get with getting them to run. Not that the hardest thing about a Super Nintendo is getting a system that runs properly, they're pretty resilient, but it's about finding the games you want to play and getting them to work on a modern TV. The SNES classic is an incredibly easy system to plug up you just take an HDMI cable, plug it up to your TV and plug in the power adapter and you're good to go. The console even comes with two SNES Classic controllers that feel just as good as the originals did when they were brand new. This entire setup makes me incredibly happy. With the 720p image you're getting natively out of the SNES you're getting a really clean image that looks great. It makes you feel like you're playing these games for the very first time.

The system also has some display options you can switch around, like a CRT mode which makes the image look like it's coming out of a really old CRT screen. And it also has an option to get a really sharp image with the pixel perfect mode which forces all the pixels to be lined up one-to-one. But personally I like the 4x3 mode. It might stretch the image out a little bit but I prefer the way that this looks because it actually reminds me of how these games played on my original old TV. There's also a selection of borders you can pick from to get rid of the left and right black bars if you want but personally I just keep them black. I like the way that it looks, it makes me focus directly on the image in the center and I think that's good enough. Although the borders do kind of remind me of the Super Game Boy, it's cool but I don't think it's really needed.

All of these options are simple but they're very welcome. With the compact design of the console and with these controllers being brand new productions of the original SNES controllers, you're not using some 25 year old controller that's gone through the wringer a couple times, this is going to give you the premiere experience of these classic games. If you've never played an SNES before – gasp – this might be the best way to play those games nowadays. Where the NES Classic had 30 games the Super Nintendo Classic has 21 which was surprising to me. It’s not like they couldn’t have matched the previous collection of 30 because the Super Nintendo has a lot of really good games. But the titles you do get on this collection are very worth it. This is simply something you can't pass up. If you find an SNES Classic out there you gotta get it. The price is worth it.

I really hope they resupply the stock of these... I hate that Nintendo always creates a shortage with their products. I need one of these for my wife for Christmas. ;)
