Let Someone Else Build a Better Xbox - Rerez

This Rerez Talks was recorded in May 2016. How did everything pan out? Let’s find out!

Hello my fellow Rezidents. So some news came on down by way of Sony announcing that they sold 40 million PlayStation 4s. 40 million PlayStation 4s. Guys that's a lot of systems. You know who is really pissed off by that news? All the investors over at Microsoft because Xbox has sold about half as many Xbox Ones. That's kind of bad especially if you're an investor. So the investors have been telling Microsoft well we don't want you to make Xboxes anymore cancel the Xbox division. You don't want to cancel the Xbox division but you may want to kill the Xbox console itself. Let's explain that. You see the Xbox system hasn't really been selling well for the past little while and that's because the Xbox system just isn't good hardware. I want it to be a really fantastic system but it just isn't the best one on the market right now. Sadly that is the PlayStation 4 just in terms of consoles because that system is just designed to play video games and it plays video games incredibly well. The Xbox One was set up more like a home entertainment PC which would have been good if we would be using it to watch television shows and record sports things on it but that's not what a lot of us bought it for. And it kind of fails at being a video game system because it just doesn't do the video games all that well. Now the idea I have for Microsoft really isn't that revolutionary. In fact some may say Microsoft pretty much invented it. Microsoft is known for making this operating system called Windows which you may have heard of. Windows works on tons of different architectures, different computers and different processors video cards. It just runs on a bunch of stuff. Hell even an Apple can run Windows. I even think my wristwatch can run Windows 95. You see there's a lot of things out there that can run Windows but why the heck do we have only one Xbox? Does that make any sense? See I kind of want to see the Xbox platform turn into a new console division in itself where it's a software platform that you can purchase and run on tons of different setups. Wouldn't it be so great if you could go to a video game store and buy 17 different variations of an Xbox console that are made by completely different manufacturers? Wouldn't that be really cool? Imagine having everybody fight over the cost of the production of these systems and being able to buy the best system that you really felt worked for you. Maybe you didn't want those weird television features that the original Xbox One had maybe you just wanted the console. What if Samsung made a version of the console that just ran the video game system stuff and maybe another company made their own version of the Xbox system that just ran the TV stuff and that would have been great because nobody would’ve bought that thing. Everybody would have bought the one that actually played games. You see this is how this entire philosophy works. Microsoft sells operating systems. That's what they’re really freaking good at. An Xbox should become an operating system. An operating system that anyone can use on any platform anywhere. Now while Windows is primarily a semi-open platform where anyone can develop software for it what Microsoft would do to actually earn money is to make an ecosystem that people could sell programs and games on. I don't know something like the Xbox Live Marketplace which they already have would be great. Imagine all these people releasing these games digitally where you could download it on any single piece of hardware that's out there. I want to see an Xbox that isn't made by Microsoft. I want to see an Xbox made by HP, made by Dell, I want to see an Xbox made by Sony. Could you imagine if the next PlayStation 4 could get the Xbox licenses and we could have Xbox games and PlayStation 4 games on the same system? Wouldn't that be really amazing? Well that's the kind of stuff that can happen if Microsoft chooses to go this route. All they need to do is take the whole Xbox idea of this whole system and make it work for them in an operating system format. They would get tons of money by licensing their name and brand off to a whole bunch of companies and consumers out there would be happy because we would have a whole bunch of companies competing to make the cheapest and best hardware available.
