Columbine Flowers in Colorado
I took these photos just north of Ward, Colorado.
The genus name Aquilegia is derived from the Latin word for eagle (aquila), because of the shape of the flower petals, which are said to resemble an eagle's claw. The common name "columbine" comes from the Latin for "dove", due to the resemblance of the inverted flower to five doves clustered together. (Shorter Oxford English dictionary, 6th ed. Those are gorgeous! Are they only native to Colorado?
I've only seen them here in Colorado, but according to Wikipedia, our state flower 'Aquilegia coerulea' is a species native to the Rocky Mountains from Montana south to New Mexico and west to Idaho and Arizona. Its common name is Colorado blue columbine. In Colorado, it's illegal to dick them up and re-plant them (in your garden for example), and picking them is discouraged.
