Planting Garlic

in #homesteading9 years ago (edited)

@knarly327 and I have been restoring an older house on a small plot of land for the last 2.5 years. Many things we have done have centred around making all the space productive and efficient. When it comes to building gardens and planting, I have focused my strategy on planting perennials.

Perennials are plants that (for the most part) will survive our Canadian winters. They go dormant when the outside temperature starts to drop in the Fall and they start growing again when the soil warms up in the Spring.

Our outside growing season starts at the end of May and extends until the beginning of October.

I have been purposely planting species of plants that are edible and once they become established will produce food that we can eat.  So far, I have planted a lot of herbs, rhubarb, raspberries, asparagus, and horseradish.

Garlic Is The Last Species Of Plant That I Have Planted This Year

Yes, we've had one snow-fall already.

Within a few days all the snow (which covered everything in a white blanket) melted and we went back to enjoying some "above" freezing outside temperatures during the day.

I've had "planting garlic" on my "to do" list for a month and although I bought the garlic that I wanted to plant, I never made the time to get it into the ground. Then the snow came and I thought that I had missed my garlic planting window. When Mother Nature gifted us with a sunny day (a few days ago) I made time to get this job done.

Ideally, the best time to plant garlic is in the late Autumn so that it will be ready to sprout in the Spring.

When it sprouts, the first food that the garlic will produce are called scapes.

A Scape Is The Flower Bud Of A Garlic Clove

Scapes grow from the top of each garlic clove. They normally are harvested in June. If the scapes are harvested at the correct time, it will allow the garlic cloves to multiply, thicken and grow into whole bulbs of garlic which contains multiple cloves. Scapes have the same flavour as garlic and they can be used in any recipe that contains garlic. They look similar to the green part of a green onion with the exception that they aren't hollow in the centre. They make a great addition to soups and as a garnish. I often use them instead of chives because they are similar. I use the scapes when they are fresh but I also dehydrate them to preserve them for use when they aren't in season.

In the photo below, you can see what a single clove of garlic looks like. The scape will grow from the pointed or tapered end of the clove.

I planted 30 individual garlic cloves from 2 different types of garlic bulbs.

To plant the cloves, I chose a spot that was well drained and I mixed compost into the soil so that the cloves would have nutrients at their disposal. I planted them about 2 inches deep and about 6 inches apart with the tapered end facing upwards.

Then I covered my garlic patch with more soil.

The garlic patch just looks like black earth at the moment but in the Spring I will show you what the scapes look like when they break through the soil and start to grow.

As a side note, not everyone can digest garlic comfortably. Garlic contains something called fructans. Fructans are a type of fructose or sugar. They can ferment in the intestinal tract and cause gas as they are digested by the bacteria in the gut. This gas builds up as the bacteria consume the sugar and this process causes bloating and distention of the gut. This can be very uncomfortable and most people learn fairly quickly if  they can tolerate garlic or not.

Garlic also contains a sulfur-rich compound called Allicin. Medicinally, garlic can lower blood pressure, reduce Low density lipids (or the bad type of cholesterol) and it contains high amounts of antioxidants which ward of infections. Basically, garlic can keep you healthy if you consume it regularly.

I welcome your comments and I invite you to follow me on my journey...you'll learn that I have a bit of a thing for plants, herbs and flower buds. ;)

Garlic is my favorite plant to grow!

Look at that beautiful garlic patch!
Thanks for sharing this great photo and supporting my post! (I really appreciate it @onceuponatime.
It looks like your plants are spaced about a foot a part.
I may have to start planting my cloves a little farther apart. I'm going to try to add to my patch if we get another decent day. ;)

I really have to get to planting mine too! My husbands grandma is from the Basque country of northern spain and brought some garlic with her when she immigrated 80 years ago! And she's kept it going that entire time which means it's been passed down to the family and now I have it in my garden. I even got to learn how to braid the garlic which makes it so pretty in the house ( :

That is an absolutely amazing garlic story. 80 year old heirloom garlic is an absolute treasure.
I'd love to learn how to braid it. Whenever I see braided garlic, I think it's like a piece of art. Beautiful.
Thanks for sharing @jayjayjeffery!

I feel pretty lucky that she did that. I hope I can keep it going for my own grand-kids someday ( ;
It's super easy to braid it. I'll have to do a post about it next time I do it ( : Maybe I can even get our "Amuma" to be a guest on the post (;

That would be incredible!

@rebeccaryan - Ma'm, I'm using Garlic as a spice of most of foods but never tried to plant it so far... Now you gave me the idea & I hope to try my best ma'm.... Nice you decided to share your experience Ma'm, hope it will grow well in this cold winter time....
To get more audience, I wish to ReSteem your post.

Oh @steemwija I do hope you try growing some of your own garlic sometime.
I am hopeful that my new patch will become established.over the winter and start growing in the Spring. :)

I find garlic to be one of the easiest crops to grow. Plant in the Fall, keep weeds out of the garlic patch with mulch, and pull up the garlic next Summer! The critters seem to leave it alone, so it's one of the few edibles I don't have to guard. My strawberries, nuts and figs are all stolen before I get to see them ripen. Rhubarb, raspberries, blackberries and all my herbs seem to be left alone as well. I need to increase the size of my garlic beds because we always run out and have to start buying it.

Thanks for this great addition of info @happyme!
We are having a decent day again today...we are suppose to get snow heavily next week so I'm going to take my chances and add to my patch because I think we are going to run out too.

Rebecca
You have been busy again as usual. When you ever rest is a mystery to me.
But in your work. You are getting good things done.

I had another slow down again today. Lawn mower wouldn't start.
And I don't give up easily. I put a new plug in and added an new air filter.
The air filter wouldn't necessarily help it run unless the old one was completely stopped up.
Everything I tried to do wouldn't work. Ugh on that.

I have been using the grass clippings that I mow to add to the garden.
Then I plan to add top soil on that. Then I want top it off with mulch.
But, I just cannot seem to get everything done with all the interruptions.

Oh well. Your garlic is something I could set out and grow.
I am thinking about what I should plant.

I would love to plant your cannabis. I would have the finest plants
in my prepared spot. Huge plants should grow there.

Oh well. Maybe one day. Thank you for showing us and giving us some ideas.

Francis

How old is the gas in the mower?
I will speak to @knarly327 about this in the morning. (Among many other things, he is a mechanic.)
Your garden is going to be great!
You would have the finest plants because you'd give them the TLC that they thrive on.
Do you know where you State stands on cannabis at the moment?
I have lots of seeds saved

Rebecca
Look in the replies. I have answered some of your question.
Florida is a medical marijuana state now. But strict controls are in place and so is the laws.

About the lawnmower: The ethanol in the gas can break down when it sits. If the gas is old it should be changed and the carb flushed. ;)

Rebecca
Good advise from a mechanic. Thank you.
Here is what irks me about all this.
I bought a cheap one years ago and it worked just fine.
For at least 10 years. Maybe more. Not even a new plug, if I can remember right.
But this much more expensive mower?
"Just When I needed You Most"
Ugh on that.
Oh well. It is good hands now.
I have written on my blog a reply to @dwolfe.
Oh, I have the song posted again too. Ha

I'm a garlic addict... after seeing this I'm considering digging up my backyard and throwing down some cloves...

Hi @jeffjagoe! You should! The most time consuming part is separating the cloves. I started with 30 and if I get another nice day on the weekend, I am going to plant some more because I use it a lot too. ;)

No vampires will be trespassing your property, that's for sure.

Nor yours either and if the garlic doesn't grow...nothing a bit of silver won't fix. LOL!

ohh nice to here u like to plant garlic awesome ,i also like garlic in my food n used it more.

I too am planting mostly perennials way down here in Alabama, because I am no longer healthy enough to perform all of the work involved with traditional gardening. My goal is to build raised beds a little at a time and grow perennials in most, and a few easy vegetables in others. I was attracted to this blog because one of the first things on my list to plant in a bed is garlic. Asparagus is another item that is high on my list. Nice to meet you today Rebecca, I linked to you from @bluelightbandit after reading his blog about the gift that you sent him. Seeing people performing random acts of kindness is very encouraging to me, it helps me to know that not everyone in the world is sinking into the dark world of selfish self-centeredness that is doomed to end in a large heap of self-pity and dispair.

Nice to meet you too @deconlee! Those are exactly my thoughts. I have been growing out of a garden barrel for the last 2 years and when I have more time will add another one. It has worked well for leafy things, cherry tomatoes, beans and peas.
Thanks for reaching out to me and letting me know that you're friends with @bluelightbandit. He's a great person and I am super lucky to have met him on Steemit. ;)

@rebeccaryan,
Do you think it can be survived in this winter season? Anyway Garlic is a very useful thing! Awaiting to see your next update!

Cheers~

Hi @theguruasia!
It should. I have planted it at another property that we once owned and it survived and came up beautifully in the Spring. This year, the forcast is suggesting that we'll have a very cold winter with a lot of snow.
I'll be able to tell you in about 4.5 months. LOL! Once the HELL is over.

@rebeccaryan,
Wow that a good news! Actually I didn't think it can survive, let's see how things going on! 4-5 Months Winter time :O Better you visit Sri Lanka in this winter time!

Cheers~

Some day I would like to visit Sri Lanka. ;)

I planted garlic even at the end of September, as winter comes before us. Now, garlic is under the snow. Attention requires little, it is unpretentious. So if the weather does not fail and the garlic grows good. It's good that you managed to plant it.

Thank you @magnata!
I hope that both of our garlic does well. ;)

My dear friend
Greetings to you for all your efforts in spreading useful
This type of seed is called garlic and its cultivation is very easy
Just put those grains in the soil and then leave them and do not need much water
Only a few days will you see it grow
Greetings to you @walidsalah

Thank you @walidsalah!
As we are in winter now, this garlic will be almost dormant until the soil warms up in the Spring.
