Bathroom makeover...
So I bit the bullet and decided to update my bathroom a bit. I was apprehensive about doing myself, but I didn't feel like paying someone else to do it either. Especially since some of the quotes I got were quite pricey!
Here's what I had:
I would have like this finish...but the problem was, it wasn't exactly finished well! There were places on my cabinets that had runs and streaks in the varnish. Plus, on the end of my sink vanity instead of having a piece of wood that matched, there was a large section of barely sealed plywood.
It wasn't a huge eyesore, but it wasn't the prettiest either.
So, a trip to Home Depot and a chat with the paint expert there led me to buy some Alkyd paint, a nice brush, a foam roller and sandpaper.
I gave everything a good sanding...although in hindsight, I wish I had done more sanding to make the paint stick/go on better.
Taking the doors off made painting the actual cabinet much easier, but I had forgotten to label the doors as I took them off, so it was sort of like a puzzle trying to match up the exact doors because as it turned out, not all the doors were exactly the same even though they were supposed to be the same. Not wanting unsightly gaps, or doors that rubbed when closed, I had to invest a good hour or two just trying to make up for the mistake of not labeling them.
All in all, the project took a few days, about 3 coats, only 1 quart of paint and a whopping 30 bucks.
Am I glad I did it? You bet! In fact, I'm going to do the kitchen next...
Looks good! This reminds me that I still need to sand and paint my new (to me) kitchen table.
Probably look way better than those who have given you quotes..what color are you gonna use for your kitchen i wonder :)
I'm going to do the same color. It's called java, so it's a dark, dark brown. Not sure about looking better. LOL But it was way cheaper!
Oh i thought it's black! But brown is cool..Well they look good, better than how i would have done lolsss
They look black until the sun hits them and then it's more of an ALMOST black. LOL I'm very pleased. And, seriously, it was so easy I'm sure you would do just fine! Like any painting...the only thing to watch for is getting too much paint on at one time resulting in a run.
Looks better with the java brown my bathroom has similar colors. though, I went with eggshell white I can tell you after see your post I may just go DARK real soon.
I like white, especially for a bathroom. But If I were to have gone white, for some reason I would want the counter top and walls to be white too...I guess I'm weird in that way. I do like the dark, and, I think it will be easier to keep clean. I had white in my kitchen in the last house and I felt like I was always cleaning them. I liked it. But it was also a factory finish. The cabinets were new. I'm not sure how a white paint would hold up. I'm a very messy cook! haha
I did go white in the kitchen too but I did my counter tops with a pink marble that had gold highlights then I used white tile for the backsplash and trim. It was just a bit more cleaning but also easier as you see the mess sooner being white but it's beautiful and very bright hardly need to turn the lights on and I love that I can just about choose any color curtains. I do love the dark in the bathroom so I ran out and got paint. your photos have inspired me Thanks for sharing.
