Logan is engaged: Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 #172– August, 1983

Uncanny X-Men Vol 1 #172: "Scarlet in Glory"

This issue opens with a wedding invitation. Wolverine is marrying Lady Mariko Yashida. The invitation is signed by "his imperial majesty Hirohito Emperor of Japan". So it is a really big deal. Also the wedding invitation has a sword stuck in it so I guess someone wants to stop this wedding really bad.

The X-Men arrive at a super luxurious apartment in Tokyo. The apartment belongs to the Daimyo of the Yashida clan, a title that now belongs to Mariko. The X-Men have enjoyed flying on the Emperor's privet jet. Ororo is there and so is Kitty, Kurt and Peter, Logan's friends. Apparently, Rogue is also there. Logan is angry, he will never forget or forgive what she did to Carol Danvers. But, Mariko welcomes Rogue and a mood of celebration settles in.

But apparently, not everything is awesome in the land of Tokyo. We see that an enemy, the Silver Samurai, wants to attack Logan's and Mariko's apartment on that same night. But this enemy also has another enemy, Yukio, who attacks him. Logan hears them fighting on the roof and goes to see what is happening.

Yukio disappears and the Silver Samurai is defeated for now. We see Yukio running away and then suddenly slipping of a roof of a building, but Storm catches her. Storm is a bit envy of the light personality of Yukio. Yukio is not scared of death and is easily prone to laughter.

Mariko goes to a secret meeting alone. To atone for her father's sins as he was a crime lord. But, she is struck and kidnapped by a woman who works for the Silver Samurai. The Viper. They want Mariko either to resign her role as clan leader or to kill her. They are pretty sure the X-Men won't be a problem.

Back at Mariko's apartment, Logan notices a storm and lightening outside and realizes that they reflect Storm's mood. Although she usually keeps her feelings in check to prevent such occurrences. Logan and Ororo each comment about how the other has changed since their separation. It's been a while since Logan decided to go solo for a while. He still can't believe that he is about to get married to a dignified and such important woman, it feels like a dream to him. Somewhere deep inside, Logan doesn't believe that he is worthy. He is also afraid that she will slowly become her father's image who used the clan to get a footing in the world of crime.

They talk while Logan drinks tea. Suddenly, he warns Storm not to drink her tea, it is poisoned. All of the X-Men besides Storm are now out, and hopefully not worse.

Suddenly we see Mariko enter a car and asks to be taken to a specific address. However, her driver appears to be Yukio in costume, who is right where she wants to be.

Suddenly, we switch to Scott Summer who has an unexpected visitor. His little brother Alex. Alex doesn't think that Scott's relationship with Madelyne Pryor is a healthy one. He think that the only thing that Pryor and Jean Grey has in common is looks, but Scott doesn't think so. Suddenly, the atmosphere changes. Scott apparently broke into the airplane company database in which Pryor worked. She flew a plane that crashed at the exact same moment that Grey died and she was the only survivor. He has to know the truth and Alex warns that this might tamper with his relationship with Pryor. A relationship which he was condoning just a few seconds ago.

Suddenly, we switch back to Mariko who now faces the Silver Samurai and the Viper. There is also a Yakuza member, a high ranking one, present. He is there as a problem solver and we know that Mariko's father has spared his life ones, so I guess he has a debt to pay. So the Silver Samurai is her older half-brother and he wants to role the clan and continue his ways of crime with their aid.

Samurai attack and Mariko is shocked. She was guaranteed safety. But she is actually not Mariko, but rather Yukio is costume again. She fights the Silver Samurai as Viper goes to look for Mariko. Well, teleports to look for Mariko.

Viper finds Mariko's car despite the unnatural heavy fog. Which means only one thing. Storm. Viper wants to attack Mariko, but she struck unexpectedly. It is Storm alright. She hit Viper just a little bit too hard, her wind got out of control. Apparently, Yukio called Storm and now Mariko must call the police. Storm doesn’t understand what is wrong with her powers as of late. It is like a mutant who is just learning to control their powers. Her experiences in outer space had a bad effect on her.

Then we see that there is someone manipulating her powers. Or so it appears. She wants to send lightening to the Silver Samurai, but they get out of control and she tries to call them back, but they attack her and make a lot of explosives explode around them. Yukio jumps and tackles Storm and they both fall out the window into the water as everything around them explodes. And the fire looks like Phoenix which scares Storm senseless from that image. Storm hopes that the reason that her powers are out of control is because she is no longer in serenity and harmony with the world around her.

Wolverine intends to go after the Silver Samurai despite the fact that he is still ill. Rogue insists on joining him. She wants to prove herself as an X-Men and be Wolverine's backup. As much as he hates it, he admits that he does need help and agrees to let her join him. The issue ends here. With this sort of cliffhanger.
