Waiotapu Thermal Wonderland - New Zealand - Nature Wonders #throwbackpack
Waiotapu is a Nature Reserve in the central region of the north island of New Zealand, about a 4 hour car ride from Auckland, 20km south of Rotorua and 40km north of Taupo. It boasts a stunning variety of nature wonders, like craters, hot springs, and colorful sulfur lakes. Waiotapu literally translates to "holy water" in the Maori language.
We stopped by there for a day during our road trip from Auckland to Queenstown. It was an absolute highlight.The entrance to the park cost about 20 USD but it’s totally worth it. You can admire a series of naturally colorful lakes covering nearly the whole spectrum. I have never seen something so uniquely beautiful like that. I also never smelled something so uniquely sulphury like that :)
Like pretty much everything in New Zealand, the park is very well organized and easy to discover on your own foot. Hiking trails and signs make it easy to navigate. We spent about 5-6 hours in there before we continued our journey way south.
There is also a geysir in Waiotapu. It’s actually a fake geysir, because they throw in a mixture of soap and water to „activate“ it, so it’s not as awesome as the Strokkur geysir in Iceland, but still quite awesome.
