#Wednesday Walk - Around Chinatown
Wednesday Walk is a challenge started by @tattoodjay. The idea is to get out for a short walk, and get some shots of what you can see within a short distance of your home office or wherever you start.
A slightly different walk from my usual walking exercise. A friend of mine, @sinlg, suggested we have a wonder around Chinatown last week. It sounded like a good idea to me - taking a walk somewhere different and familiarising myself with the area. I don’t go out very often, and I am directionally challenged, so it’s good to have someone who knows the area with me.
This is what one sees as he or she comes out of the train station. As you emerged from the station, you are in the heart of Chinatown.

On the same street, as you came out of the station is this, ‘The Tintin Shop’. Some of you will be familiar with this cartoon character. The shop sells all Tintin memorabilia.

Paintings on the wall. These murals depict what it was like in days gone by, add a bit of colour, and culture to the place. Many passersby stop to take a picture or pose for a picture. Very interesting murals indeed.
This mural shows a couple relaxing and eating mooncakes during the Moon-cake Festival while the children have fun with lanterns.

This mural shows a calligrapher by the side of the building. In days gone by, calligraphers set up 'stall' by the roadside, or on the streets. They wrote auspicious phrases and/or words on red paper. People bought them and put them up in their homes - especially on both sides of the main door, in the hope that the home will be blessed. Why red paper? This is because Chinese believe red colour brings good luck, and wards off evils. The words are usually in black, but if you are more affluent, you prefer them written in gold.

This is a stretch of shop houses along the road.

This is a ‘famous’ building in that it has been here for a long time and there is probably some family history behind it. Of course, the shape of the building is also a talking point. It was given a new coat of paint recently.

This is an old Hindu temple – a smaller one in the area, probably here before Chinatown established itself as Chinatown.

...and on the other side of the Chinatown there is this Chinese temple – one of many in the area.

It was a pleasant walk, and the company was good, and greatly appreciated. All in all, an afternoon well spent.

What a cool place for a walk I would love to check out the Tintin shop
And those are cool murals
Thanks for joining Wednesday Walk :)
Ah, I see you have heard of Tintin. Yes, I think it is very clever of them to paint murals that tell stories of the place. The murals become more meaningful.
A pleasure to join the Wednesday Walk. :-)
Yes indeed, I remember seeing the comics when I was young an yes the concept of those murals is so cool
Howdy sir Vincent! what a cool post! I love those murals too. In our cities something like that would be totally painted over and destroyed in one night! Is this in Singapore?
In Singapore, murals, unless approved by the authorities, is considered graffiti and illegal. You will be caned and jailed if caught. Simple as that. So, graffiti is not a problem in Singapore. We do get the odd one or two by ignorant fools.
lol...ignorant fools! lol...I'm not laughing at you sir Vincent because there are some horrible graffiti markings but I was thinking that in so many cities they have fabulous artwork done on the sides of buildings and such like you showed in Spain so I guess it just depends on the artist. But yes, eliminating all of it gets rid of the garbage too so I can see why they would.
