Germinating my Aji Amarillo chili seeds
View this post on Hive: Germinating my Aji Amarillo chili seeds
I've been given some Aji Amarillo chili seeds by a local customer and a few days ago I started to get them to germinate. Chili seeds need moisture and warmth to germinate but it's still cold here in NSW, Australia. I tried spreading the seeds in a pot outdoors but they have not germinated yet after two weeks. So I decided to do it indoor kind of controlled temperature and they started germinating in less than a week. I forgot to take some photos for this post but luckily my wife wanted to plant another type of chili so I did the photos with her seeds.
In a little plastic take away box, I added some old soil from my black turmeric pot after harvesting the rhizomes and I sprayed some water to the surface so that about 5mm is being soaked (looking through the side of the box).
I then split the chili pepper lengthwise with a knife and extracted the seeds.
I then spread some seeds on the surface, I could have done a better job here by separating the each seeds out of their cluster but I was really lazy today lol. Anyway, I just need a couple of viable seeds anyway so no biggies.
I then just slightly covered the seeds with a thin layer of soil, this is probably not even needed but that's how I do it and I enjoy doing it 😜
Here is my temperature control chamber. I used an old 7 watt reptile heating mat installed on the top of my bedside table and set the plastic container on top of the mat. The mat produces just a warm enough temperature all night and in the morning it might get a bit warmer but nothing dramatic, it's still early Spring and it's probably colder inside the room than outside the house.
As you can see there, the Aji Amarillo seeds have germinated. Tomorrow morning, I will be transferring them to their individual container and let them grow a bit more before planting them in the garden. I will probably be using an egg box as it will make it easier to transplant them in the garden bed, just cut off the egg cup and put everything in the ground, the paper of the egg box will naturally decompose and the roots will go through it before that happens.

I love growing chilli plants but have never done so from seed, I have always just bought the young plant. Thank you for sharing this with us, i will give it a go for sure xx
Next season, also try to leave a couple of chili peppers on the plant. They will drop to the ground and next season they will germinate by their own.

Oh BUGGER I still havent planted chilli. Thanks for the reminder!!! I will be posting re the garden challenge later to show what seeds I have going..nice one on reptile mat.
I will have five types of chilies this year. But I’m not a big chili eater lolol. Hopefully this will change a bit as these two ones are not very hot and full of flavour

Wow , I never knew this process.. After coming here in Ukraine I am craving for proper chilis... I will definitely try this process...
Another very easy process is moisten a paper tissue, put the seeds on the tissue, fold it in four and place it in a ziplock bag and check every other day.

That is super easy....
Awesome! Kinda crazy to think it's cold by you when it's 92F here by me. Sigh. I'm waiting for fall to begin. Haha. That's super exciting you got them to sprout! Sometimes, when things aren't wanting to come up for me, putting the tray on a heating pad might help warm it up just enough. Just a thought. I'll be following so I can see them as they grow! :)
😂
It will be very hot in a few months down here too and then it will be cold on your side heheh

Yep. So true. And then I'll be wishing it were warm again. :) can't win eh? Hahah. How hot does it get by you? I imagine hotter then here....
It got to 111.2F last year.
Ok so about the same. Well a little cooler here. We do get to triple digits....but this year the highest we got to was 107 I believe....but of course, with the humidity, it felt hotter. So what is your favorite veggies to grow in the heat? Are you able to grow anything outside in the cold? How cold does it get there?
Hmmm I sometimes need to set a shadecloth but our summer garden is usually Okra, Aloe Vera, Chokos, Chili.... As in colder seasons (around 35F) I can grow stuffs but I usually don't do gardening cuz I'm busy with other things.
Oh wow, your cold season is only 35! Nice! That's lucky. We can get down into the teens as far as cold goes, but not often. Certainly low to mid 20's. You can grow a lot in winter if you only get down to 35!! As for summer, I'm going to have to look up chokos. That's new to me. You'd do great with vegetable amaranth. It totally takes the heat and keeps on kicking. Something to ponder. :) Oh and heirloom purple cowpeas would rock it in your garden.
Ah, Chokos as in Chayotes. Yes I have those growing but I don't think they will produce anything. Not long enough of a season and too cold a winter. It was an experiment for me this year. My plan is to take a clipping to root and bring it inside. I'm hoping to keep it alive overwinter inside and plant out once it warms. Hopefully, that will get us something out of it next year. I don't often do the challenging things but sometimes I like to experiment. And my dad loves chayotes (chokos) so I wanted to get some growing for him. :)
Chokos should not need to be brought back inside. In winter they loose their leaves but when the climate is warm again they should re-sprout.
Thank you for sharing!

I love those plants where you can just take the seeds right out of the fruit and plant them. Tomatoes are the same, so chillies and tomatoes on my porch.
It's good.
